Petition to New York State Legislature
Save Voter Turnout
Our political system rests on the participation of all Americans in our process of self-governance. That participation has been steadily declining in the last decade, as depressed voter turnout and decreasing youth involvement in politics have undermined the integrity of our democratic system. That is why we, The Youth Democratic Policy Group, now ask the New York state senate and assembly to promote civic engagement in New York State. We ask the New York State Assembly Election Law Committee to report bill A7919, authorizing persons 16 years of age or older to register to vote, to the floor of the Assembly, and we further ask the State Assembly to pass a similar bill sponsored by State Senator Michael Gianaris in this 2017 legislative session.

Lower the Voting Age to 16
On 11/14/16, thousands of high school students in the United States staged a walkout to protest the election of Donald Trump. They took a stand to show that they believe in equality and justice, and they proved that youth are deeply invested in their future. Elections at the city, state, and national level don't just impact the current adult population. Elections have an immense effect on the kind of world we will live in 10 years, 20 years, even 100 years from now. The youth of today will be the adults of tomorrow, and we want a say in what that tomorrow will look like. If the US government changes the voting age to 16, youth will be given the voice we deserve in our government. We want to be the leaders of today, so that our future can be the best it can possibly be. Photo credit: Jason Redmond/AFP/Getty Images
