Petition to Henry T. Yang

Condemnation of Charlie Munger's UCSB Dorm Proposal

Charles Munger's proposed plan to tear down UCSB's Chi-5 dorms and replace them with two suite-style towers is inefficient and does not represent the will of the UCSB student body. The UC Board of Regents must encourage Mr. Munger to put his funding elsewhere in the UC system, such as further support and development for mental health and academic resources, or compromise on his unacceptable conditions for the construction of his proposed buildings (windowless cell-blocks devoid of dining commons or adequate access to the outdoors). While Mr. Munger's donation of $200 million dollars to "fix massive stupidity [in the UC housing system]" is undoubtedly generous, the strings attached to his construction project would only serve to make the lives of UCSB undergraduates needlessly more difficult. No access to the ventilation and sunlight afforded by windows would have severe effects on the psyche and morale of students, with claustrophobia and stress more likely in the prison-esque dorm rooms. Additionally, the lack of cafeteria-style dining commons in favor of communal kitchens would prove inefficient for students, simultaneously putting those previously employed at Ortega and De La Guerra Dining Commons out of work. These clear steps backward in the evolution of student housing come at the cost of resources better spent on improving the University's ability to educate and provide resources for its students above and beyond the luxury of a new coat of paint or updated appliances where existing dorms are already more than sufficient. For these reasons, we implore you to stand against this proposed construction, holding Mr. Munger accountable to the will of the people his attempted purchase of UC Santa Barbara most affects. Sincerely, Concerned Students of UC Santa Barbara
