Petition to The Honorable Allison Silberberg
Let Krista Sing!
Krista Clouse, a talented soprano and street performer, was arrested and jailed by the City of Alexandria (Va) police for violating a city noise ordinance. For many years, Krista has earned a living performing in Old Town, Alexandria and near The White House in Washington, DC. Busking (singing) is LEGAL on the streets of Alexandria without a permit. However, if you use a music amplification device, you need a permit. Ms. Clouse has said that the tips she earns while singing on the street help support her family. Ms Clouse does not amplify her voice but, as part of her performance, needs orchestral accompaniment. As you can see in the video above, her voice is much louder than the music being played in the speaker. I have often seen her perform near The White House to the delight of crowds and secret service agents. City of Alexandria, Virginia: Let Krista Sing! The video of her arrest is shocking: http://redbricktown.com/2016/09/video-of-old-town-opera-singer-arrest-for-busking/ NBC4 in DC: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Opera-Singer-Arrested-for-Violating-Alexandria-Noise-Ordinance-392280941.html
Petition to Mayor , Borough Council
Freedom of Expression within West Chester Borough
The borough of West Chester PA is trying to pass an ordinance requiring the street artists to obtain a permit and uphold it with the years. The list of street performing (Busking) is acting, singing, playing musical instruments, pantomime, juggling, magic, dancing, reading, puppetry, sidewalk art (working with non-permanent, water-soluble media, i.e., chalk, pastels, or watercolors directly on the pavement), and reciting. Does this include the school marching bands who perform at public events on the street? According to the ordinance it seems like it. Reading this ordinance makes it seem like children who go to parks to draw would be considered Buskers. The ordinance would be infringing upon the first amendment of the performers and their right to express themselves. The most outrages part of the ordinance is simply the fact that the borough would like to enforce this on private property where the performs already need permission. Up until this year, the musicians were seen as a beautification to the town and as long as there were no problems with noise disturbances the musicians were free to play. Busking Ordinance
Petition to Jacksonville City Council
Allow Jacksonville, FL to have Buskers and Street Performers!
We, the citizens of Jacksonville, “The Bold New City of the South,” want to petition to have the right to perform in public spaces throughout the city. We would prefer to be able to enjoy the artful expressions of talented performers in our public parks as we walk through or spend time there. There is a vast amount of talent in our city and the rules and regulations make it difficult for most artists to share their craft. From musicians, artists, magicians, jugglers, fire performers, singers, dancers, etc, Jacksonville has an opportunity to let these performers shine. These artists are not hurting anyone or thing, they actually improve the mood, vibration, atmosphere and safety of our public spaces. They are a perfect reflection of our diverse and vibrant city. We recommend that you refocus your efforts to create laws that truly improve the quality of life for Jacksonville rather than picking on and making it difficult to nearly impossible for peaceful artists to share their art and accept donations. Allow Artists to perform in parks freely ANYWHERE for donations.
