Petition to Senator David Leyonhjelm

The Right to Die

To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled. We direct this petition to Senator David Leyonhjelm with the hopes that his current efforts to challenge the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 in the Senate will progress further. Federal law (Euthanasia Laws Act 1997) currently denies the ACT, NT and Norfolk Island the power to pass their own territory-wide laws on euthanasia. This federal law came into effect in 1997, in response to the controversy of the Rights to The Terminally Ill Act 1995 which was passed in the Northern Territory, allowing euthanasia. The current Act not only overturned the law in the Northern Territory, but removed the power from all territories to pass laws on euthanasia, while the remaining states have full autonomy. This amendment impacts over 650,000 people's rights to freedom, in that it discriminates by state. We believe that Senator Leyonhjelm's request to overturn the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 in Parliament should be passed, and we give him our full support. Your Petitioners ask that the Senate revoke the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997, returning each Australian Territory their full autonomy to conclusively debate and pass their own euthanasia laws, whether that be for or against. Petitioners: Rachael Mifsud, Alexia Mitchell, Priya Nandini, Jessica Reuben and Leah Robertson.Photo extracted from: https://www.legalbites.in/euthanasia-in-india/
