Petition to Dennis Walcott
Return the Mobile Library to Hunters Point, Queens
Since the decommissioning of the mobile library in November 2016, Hunters Point, Queens has been without essential public library service. Queens Library at Hunters Point is not slated to open until September 2017, according to an announcement made by Queens Library President, Dennis Walcott at the February Community Board 2 meeting. When the mobile library was decommissioned in November 2016, the community was told the Hunters Point Library would be open imminently. Hunters Point is now expected to be without public library service for at least 11 months, in total. Another spring and summer without local public library service in Hunters Point is unacceptable. Residents of Hunters Point were promised a public library more than a decade ago. Queens Library must provide mobile library service to the community in the meantime. We request the immediate reinstatement of book mobile service until Hunters Point Library is fully constructed, staffed, and operational. The Hunters Point community deserves regular, accessible public library resources, which the mobile library has already proven it can provide as a stop-gap measure.
