Petition to Brit Awards
Publish diversity figures
On Thursday January 14th 2016 the nominees for the 36th annual BRIT Awards were announced. Counting categories where only British artists are eligible, out of 53 spots available only 5 were filled by acts featuring black artists. And I counted Little Mix twice! Meanwhile, the likes of Adele, James Bay and Years & Years secured 4 nominations each.I’m involved with the UK DIY indie scene where I've had the pleasure of working with unsigned artists as both a blogger and gig promoter in my spare time. From my own experience I know that the BRITs - arguably our nation’s biggest music awards bash - isn't a representative take on British music. Instead, it's a soulless industry pageant where the likes of Olly Murs give out the gongs. For BME artists, the BRITs make it painfully obvious that the glass ceiling doesn't just exist - it's tripled glazed and Simon Cowell's swallowed the key to the lock for good measure.Seriously, did I dream up the past year in music?.. Did JME and Skepta not set up one of the most refreshing years for UK Grime in bare time? Did Stormzy not get rightfully "gassed" when he scooped 'Best Male' and 'Best International Act' at the MOBOs and BET Awards respectively? Did M.I.A. not make the year's boldest artistic statement and comeback of 2015 in one fell swoop giving her two pence on the migrant crisis via her thought-provoking video for 'Borders'? C'mon, BRIT organisers, as this clip illustrates - even OAPs know who Stormzy is! This needs to change. Last month, after the fury of the Oscars similar lack of diversity, the Academy announced it would be taking steps to diversify the voting body. We need to harness this positive momentum and push the BRITS to be truly representative of British music. As a first step I’m calling on the BRITS to publish their voting academy’s diversity figures. Please sign my petition and join me.
Petition to Elmbridge Borough Council
Save Langley's Record Shop (West Molesey, UK)
Call upon Elmbridge Borough Council to reject the current planning application and seek to preserve one of the few remaining bastions of authentic UK pop culture! Langley's Records has been going since 1962 and in its current premises since 1972. Geoff Langley, 79, has seen over five decades of musical genres come and go and still thrives on the enjoyment of running his shop. It is a local institution, treasured by many loyal and new customers - people also travel from miles around, in some cases overseas, to visit this beloved music mecca and spend hours hunting through the huge stock of records. This unique shop is now in real danger of being shut down, purely to make way for a Royal Mail customer service point and some doors. This would be a devastating loss not only for Mr Langley and his customers, but also for British musical heritage. We can't just stand by and watch this happen. Please support this petition.
Petition to Backstreet Boys
A European Backstreet Boys Cruise
European fans are here for the boys on their European IAWLT tour and we want to be able to cruise with the boys in Europe too! You have not been forgotten about in Europe as you can see from the support on tour so far. The US cruises aren't accessible for all as much as we would like due to family responsibility or monetary issues, a European cruise would be much more accessible and long overdue, it would also be an opportunity for American fans to join us and see the beauty and richness of cultures We have to offer in Europe. Please consider our request and remember Europe loves you.
Petition to European Broadcasting Union, European Boardcasting Union, European Broadcasting Union
Eurovision: Ban The National Juries!
People of Europe and the Eurovision Community, I believe that the juries should be scrapped and let 100% of the voting to go to the people. We should be able to decide who our favourites are without the juries destroying the true winner’s chances; the juries should not be able to take control. Over recent decades, certain patterns have been obviously on show, highlighted by this year's contest once again, that juries vote according to geographical location (known as Block Voting) and their predictable votes for the top songs, that the majority of the time do not reflect the interests of the viewer, how can that be justified? This is not only frustrating but saps the fun out of the world's favourite song contest, they must stop! A main example of this involved the UK this year: On telephone votes, Poland got the most votes, so you expect that they should get a decent amount of points. No, the UK gave nothing because the national jury did not like it and put it last. How is that fair? This was the same in 4 other countries, including Ireland. I love Eurovision and believe it is one of the greatest highlights of the year, but I do not want to see this politically-lead era that plagues the contest at the moment. So join me and sign this petition, see the banning of the National Juries and we can all enjoy a non-political Eurovision. Be a part of the biggest rule change in Eurovision history. Thank You.
