No more blackface at the MET
In 2015, the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Otello made history in choosing to discontinue the practice of using blackface style makeup for that opera's title character. The production's director, Bartlett Sher, was quoted as saying "It really did seem very obvious given our cultural history and political history in the United States, that for me and my production team the idea of putting [Othello] in blackface was completely unthinkable...We can’t give in to that cultural trope.”Despite this statement, The Metropolitan Opera continues to use blackface on its stage in 2018, most notably in the Sonja Frisell production of Verdi's Aida. Let's tell the MET that it's time to end the use of blackface style makeup on its stage.
Petition to SUNY Geneseo
Keep the "Arts" in "Liberal Arts" at SUNY Geneseo
Recently, President Battles has decided to terminate Finger Lakes Opera at SUNY Geneseo. This program has flourished over the past three years, as well as "become a go-to summer music place in our area" (Rochester City Newspaper). While many students, faculty, and professionals across the country are upset by this, it is important that we take action in situations like these in order to prevent similar cuts to the Arts programs at Geneseo. By signing this petition, you are giving your support to the the Arts at SUNY Geneseo. Hopefully by seeing how much support there is for the Arts here, the College will feel more inclined to keep programs like Finger Lakes Opera running in the future in an attempt to "look for sustainable ways to enhance our capacity as a public cultural resource" (Denise Battles).
