Petition to Competition and Markets Authority
Block the Sainsburys/Asda merger to protect jobs, prices and competition
The supermarket industry is already dominated by four large players, who dictate prices and squeeze suppliers. Merging two of those giants would only further increase their power to control the industry and squeeze suppliers’ margins. It is in in no way any benefit to the UK public to see this merger go ahead. The only beneficiaries are the shareholders of these two brands. There would be job cuts to address role-duplication. For example, will Sainsburys and Asda really need two separate distribution channels and the labour involved in running them? No. They cut one of them. A deal has been agreed by the two companies, and this must be addressed immediately.
