In the event of a rupture of the hull or pipelines, they ensure the entry of boric acid into the reactor, muffling it and providing cooling. The use of this, as well as other systems in the complex guarantees a high level of internal safety of the reactor installation.The first power unit with the VVER-1200 reactor - the power unit No. 6 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 - was included in the Russian power system in August 2016. Generation III + power units are currently being built in the US, France and other countries, however, it was the sixth power unit of Novovoronezh NPP that became the first unit of the last generation in the world to reach the stage of physical start-up and pilot production. Another similar block is being built there. It is also planned to use VVER-1200 at the Leningrad NPP-2 under construction and at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (near Ostrovets, Grodno Region). The general contractor for the construction of all these new power units is the ASE Group of Companies.The tasks that are put in the process of reactor operation are experimental demonstration of the key components of the closed fuel cycle, development in real operating conditions of new types of equipment and advanced technical solutions introduced to improve the efficiency, reliability and safety. As fuel in the BN-800 can be used as usual (with uranium oxide) and uranium-plutonium MOX fuel (a mixture of 235U and 239Pu). The use of uranium-plutonium fuel in this "fast" reactor allows not only to use the reserves of energy plutonium, but also to dispose of weapons-grade plutonium, as well as to burn long-lived isotopes of actinides from the irradiated fuel of thermal reactors. This gives hope for the formation in the future of an ecologically clean, closed nuclear fuel cycle.The commissioning of the BN-800 proved that Rosatom retained its competence in the field of practical experience in the construction and launch of fast reactors. The reliable operation of the unit is designed to contribute to ensuring the nuclear power industry of Russia with fuel for a long time due to the reproduction, utilization of spent nuclear fuel from thermal power plants and the utilization of radioactive waste by involving in the useful production cycle of dumped uranium and plutonium. In October 2016, the oldest American energy magazine POWER - one of the most influential and authoritative international professional publications in this field - evaluated these prospects and awarded the fourth power unit of Beloyarsk NPP with the Power Awards for 2016 in the category "Top Plants". It was observed, that this power unit is the most powerful breeder in the world (fast breeder reactor) on fast neutrons with a liquid metal sodium coolant. The nomination "Best Stations" identifies the most promising and innovative projects that indicate the vector of development of the entire industry. Thanks to the construction of the BN-800, as experts say, Russia currently ranks first in the world in the technology of building "fast" reactors.

Save Indian Point from Closure: Keep NYC Reliable and Clean
Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, NY is being threatened with closure by an agreement that is not to the benefit of the consumer or surrounding communities and for all intensive purposes will reduce the reliability of power provided to the NYC. From am economic standpoint, the closure of this plant will be devastating to the neighboring communities as the 1200 jobs are ripped from the small towns surrounding the plant--crippling school districts and small businesses and raising taxes to residents. [Local officials were not consulted prior to an agreement being reached with the state government.] This action will also greatly hinder the ability for New York State to meet its announced clean energy goals as natural gas replaces the plant in the absence of another viable option. Don’t store nuclear waste near our drinking water source.
The drinking water we depend on should be protected from Nuclear contamination. If Florida Power and Light (FPL) has its way, they will be storing radioactive carcinogens below Florida’s Biscayne Aquifer. The Biscayne Aquifer is the primary source of drinking water for millions of people in South Florida. We must stop this dangerous project before it begins. Here’s why: A 2015 study by the U.S. Geological Survey of seismic reflection stated there are faults along the aquifer that “…could provide high permeability passageways for groundwater movement.” In other words, there’s a real possibility of radioactive materials leaking into the Biscayne Aquifer if this practice were to be implemented. If a leak occurs, it will be impossible to clean up. This risk is unacceptable to millions of South Floridians. Unfortunately the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission dismissed a legal challenge to FPL nuclear waste storage plans -- on a filing technicality. The science is clear. The time for State and Federal lawmakers in Florida to step up and protect the citizens they’ve been elected to serve is now.
