Free Lasah the elephant from daily abuse

Lasah is a 37 year old wild born elephant who was captured and taken into captivity when he was a baby, separated from his mum and herd, and who has suffered in zoos, tourism and entertainment for over 25 years. Lasah has been forced to work in a logging camp, lived in zoos including Singapore Zoo, perform in shows including in a popular Malaysian entertainment outlet and used in commercials and the 1999 film Anna and the King. Eleven years ago, he was sent to the popular Malaysian tourist island, Langkawi and since then has been used by the profit-making Langkawi Elephant Adventures [LEA]. There, Lasah is used for elephant rides and lives all alone, which is devastating for a social animal like elephants. LEA also continues to offer Lasah for other commercial purposes on their website. In July last year, activists exposed photos of Lasah chained on all four legs behind public eyes during LEA's closing hours. In March 2017, eight months after the campaign for Lasah started, the Malaysian environment ministry said that Lasah is chained on two feet (when not exploited for tourist money). Lasah has suffered for too long. This abuse must stop. Sign this petition to get him to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and then click on the link below to know what more you can do to help #FreeLasah.

Petition to The Federal Government of Malaysia, All relevant state parties

Stop Crackdowns on Intellectuals in Malaysia!

We, the undersigned individuals, register our gravest concern and strongest objection to a series of crackdowns on intellectuals from September 25 to October 3. These include the arrest of Turkish writer Mustafa Akyol, the harassment and persecution of Akyol’s host, Dr Farouk Musa of Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) and the banning of 22 books, including discursive writings by Akyol, Farouk Musa, scholar Faisal Tehrani (Dr. Mohd Faizal Musa) and cleric Ustaz Wan Ji Wan Hussin. “Religious teaching without tauliah [proper accreditation]” (Section 11 of Act 559 in this case) is a Syariah offense normally reserved for errant preachers in mosques and surau. Actions by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAWI) against Akyol for allegedly committing such an offence prior to an aborted forum in Nottingham University Malaysia, and against Dr. Farouk Musa for allegedly abetting Akyol, set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for academic freedom and, certainly, freedom of speech in Malaysia. Are intellectual discourses in universities involving Islam now being regulated by State Islamic Religious Departments? Do universities need to get clearance from the religious departments before inviting any speakers on any topics related to Islam? As Islam is being applied in almost every sector in Malaysian society, are the religious bureaucrats now the de-facto thought police for the nation to decide what thoughts we can and cannot have? We also view the recent banning of books by Akyol, Farouk Musa, Faisal Tehrani and Ustaz Wan Ji under Section 7 of the Printing Presses and Publication Act (PPPA) as a further attempt at mind control. Section 7 permits the banning of publications that are or are likely to be “prejudicial to public order, morality, security,” “to alarm public opinion,” or “prejudicial to public interest or national interest”. We ask, how did Home Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, find “Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty” and its Malay translation “Islam Tanpa Keekstreman: Berhujah Untuk Kebebasan” by Mustafa Akyol, the two volumes of “Wacana Pemikiran Reformis” edited by Dr. Farouk Musa, “Aku_maka aku ada” (I _ therefore I am) by Faisal Tehrani and “Ulamak yang bukan pewaris Nabi” (Those clergy who are not the Prophet’s successors) by Ustaz Wanji, to be harmful to public order, morality, security, public opinion, public interest or national interest? Are ideas like moderation, reform and liberty now enemies of the state? The crackdowns on intellectuals during these two weeks is not an isolated development but a serious and dangerous escalation in a long and on-going process of thought policing to close the minds of Malaysians, especially Muslims. If we do not speak up for Akyol, Farouk, Faisal, Wan Ji and others whom the state want silenced, soon there will be no one left to speak up for us when we are silenced. We demand the Federal Government and all other relevant state parties: (a) To end all harassments, investigations and charges on Dr. Farouk Musa, IRF and their past and future intellectual guests; (b) To lift the ban of the abovementioned books as well as other books that promote intellectual discourses and moderation; (c) To abolish the Printing Presses and Publications Act and to replace it with a human-rights-compliant publication law; (d) To uphold Freedom of Expression, as enshrined in Article 10(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution and to end all thought policing on academics and academia; ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Note : This is a joint statement drafted by a group of civil society organisations in Malaysia, the coordinating unit is Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy, any queries please contact us at

Petition to H.E. Xi Jinping., H.E. Ambassador Huang Huikang

Free my sister & nephew. They're trapped in China by inhumane travel bans.

Set my sister & nephew free. They are trapped in China by inhumane travel bans Current state My sister, Cheng Chau Yang, and her 8-year old son, have been trapped in China for close to 2 years now. They are BOTH Malaysians.   They have not broken any laws. Lack of transparency They have not been given any formal documentation on details of the bans, nor was the Malaysian Embassy notified about the bans. My sister and son have been the victims of parental child-abduction Previously, my sister’s former husband (“X”) and his family had abducted the child twice (the second abduction lasted 820 days), and attempted a violent abduction just outside the court’s premises on 15th January, 2016, in flagrant disobedience of the custody order. The third (attempted) abduction took place after X attended a court-supervised visitation of my nephew. Despite these behaviors, X has successfully imposed the travel bans on my sister and nephew. During the 8 months when X ignored the court order to hand over the child, the court repeatedly told my sister that they could not do much to uphold my sister’s custodial rights, and asked her to put in more effort herself. They can be trapped in China for the next 10 years The court has verbally told my sister that X has the right to renew these bans till the son turns 18, so as to ensure his weekly access right. However, X has refused to see the child despite my sister’s repeated invitation and numerous proposals. Impact of these travel bans My sister and nephew’s basic right to freedom of movement have been deprived. They can’t come home to visit our ailing 94-year old grandma and relatives, they can’t visit us during Chinese New Year and other major festivals, my sister’s livelihood is affected as she cannot attend meetings outside of China, and my nephew is deprived of the opportunities to attend study or holiday trips. This is inhumane! These bans contravene UN International Conventions The travel bans that prevent these two foreigners from leaving China are a mistake. They have to be, as they contravene multiple UN International Conventions that China is a signatory of, chief among them Article 10 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Article 15 on the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Will you help us? I am a distraught sister of Chau Yang. We have exhausted all channels of appeal in China, but have received no formal reply. Will you help to set my sister and nephew free in China? Every signature and share will bring them closer to freedom. Please click here to follow & share our FB page Our family has made a movie about Chau Yang's long eventful journey. "Mama on a Mission" 《我妈妈有个使命》. Please feel free to share it.
