Petition to Ydanis Rodriguez

Save Inwood Library! Salve la Biblioteca de Inwood!

To Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez: We, a diverse group of parents, students, teachers, seniors, immigrants, workers and professionals from District 10, call on you to oppose the proposed Inwood Library/Housing project that would result in the demolition of the Inwood Library. Inwood Library is essential to our community. It is one of the most heavily utilized branches in the NYPL system. Tens of thousands of Inwood residents use its resources including free bilingual programs, literacy classes, computer skills training, homework help and career counseling. Recently our library underwent a major renovation for a new children's center and expanded computer space. In June 2016, Inwood Library won an award as the best neighborhood branch in Manhattan. Now, the city wants to sell the land to a developer and tear down our library, leaving our community without critical services for years. The city has promised that the developer will build a new library at this site, but has provided no concrete plans for any temporary replacement. We have no guarantee that the library will be replaced by a facility that's similar in scope. Council Member Rodriguez, we call on you to oppose the proposed demolition of Inwood Library, which would cripple the education and future of our children and hurt all of our community.
