Withdraw Olivet Nazarene University from Inaugural Parade

Dear Dr. Bowling and Olivet administrators, It was recently announced that the Olivet Nazarene University marching band has been scheduled to participate in the upcoming inaugural parade for President-elect Trump. Sadly, President-elect Trump has consistently articulated and advocated policies that undermine the Christian commitments of communities like Olivet.  His well-documented sexism, his political alliances with white supremacists, and his hostility towards immigrants and refugees are just a few positions incompatible with Christian teachings in general and the Nazarene message of holiness in particular. Any university presence at the inauguration would suggest toleration or, even worse, endorsement of the President-elect’s objectionable attitudes on these and other issues.  Such a presence is simply unacceptable.   We call on you to decline this and any other invitations to participate in President-elect Trump’s inaugural festivities.  We make this request not out of partisan opposition.  Both educational and religious organizations should be capable of holding differing political opinions within the bonds of community.  Yet, conservatives and liberals alike acknowledge that President-elect Trump has demeaned and alienated many, with little or no effort made towards reconciliation.  For Olivet to embody the faith it proclaims, we have a responsibility to stand with those marginalized by the President-elect’s divisive rhetoric rather than march in celebration of it.

America Let's Unite Again!!!!!

President-elect Trump, bring America together!  “It’s time for us to come together as one united people.” These are words from your presidential acceptance speech of November 9, 2016, and we believe in them! With the hard-fought campaigns behind us, now is the time for Democrats and Republicans to work together for a common national good. As president, it is your responsibility to pioneer efforts to unite the country.  The tension in the country has reached a boiling point. The Bible teaches us that a house divided against itself cannot stand. Despite differences across political affiliations, race, ethnicity or religious beliefs, we are all God’s children, and we must work together for forward progress. We believe that your election was the result not of a campaign but of an incredible movement, and that that work is just beginning. That said, you have a mandate to work together with Republicans and Democrats to unify our country. The goal you have set out to rebuild the country and restore the American dream can only be fulfilled when the national divide is healed. We are asking that you set the example for unity and singleness of purpose for the nation. We are tired of bickering. As president of all citizens, you have been entrusted with the responsibility to promote unity in our country. We are requesting that you: a)   Use Twitter as a tool for peacemaking and example setting to achieve the project of national healing.  b)   Make good on your election night promise of reaching out to all Americans, including those who voted against and opposed you. We believe you will succeed if you set your mind to unifying the nation. You are a good person with a good heart, clearly motivated by a sincere passion to make America great again. We believe you will succeed, but the first step is making national unity a priority.
