- ENGLISH -In February, when the hunting season ends, more than 1000 galgos are killed every day!Galgos are traditionally used to hunt for hares.. Every year new litters are born, from which only the best galgos are used for hunting, and the rest are killed at the beginning of the hunting season. Around 3 years of age even the galgos that have been hunting well are killed, as the hunters believes young galgos to be more efficient at hunting. The traditional methods of killing the galgos are brutal, hanging is common. Galgos that have not been good at hunting are hanged with their back paws left on the ground (the so called ’pianist’). Alternatively, galgos are left in the forest, tied or with a deliberately broken leg, to starve to death. Others are, when still alive, thrown into empty wells or into steep canyons.50.000 - 100.000 galgos are killed each year, most of them with these traditional and illegal methods.

Stop cocaine use in greyhound racing

Did you know that racing dogs test positive for serious drugs, including cocaine? On June 29, 2017, ABC First Coast News revealed that there were 18 cocaine positives at Florida’s Orange Park dog track in the first four months of 2017. Stories from the Associated Press/New York Times, the Washington Post, ABC World News Tonight, Great Britain’s Daily Mail, Canada’s CBC and other outlets across the world soon followed. The Animal Rescue Site and the Humane Society of the United States also blogged about it. Now, new reporting shows that the kennel worker involved, Charles F. McClellan has a long history of humane offenses and drug violations. In 2013, he failed to report the death of a racing greyhound as required by statute. In 2012, when one of his dogs tested positive for oxymorphone, his license was revoked and he was assessed a fine of $5,000. But later, when he claimed the drugging was “inadvertent,” the state reinstated his license and reduced the fine to $1,000! In the latest case, a dog named Flicka was found with cocaine in her system on six different occasions! Ten of the twelve dogs involved are owned by Julia Ward, the current President of industry front group the National Greyhound Association. And more, the kennel where the dogs tested positive is owned by NGA board member Steve Sarras, a politically connected recipient of greyhound subsidies in West Virginia. Kennel worker Charles F. McClellan has had his license suspended but neither he, nor Ward or Sarras have been criminally charged. Unfortunately, this is only the latest case of greyhounds suffering abuse in an apparent race fixing scheme. In January, cocaine was found in five greyhounds within two weeks at Derby Lane, another Florida dog track. The man responsible, championship “dogman” Malcolm McCallister, lost his racing license. He didn’t even pay a fine and no criminal charges were ever brought. Back in 2004, our investigations revealed that greyhounds test positive all over the country. 119 dogs were drugged in the Sunshine State alone that year. If you are as disgusted as I am with this callous and greedy industry, please take the time now to sign our petition to Governor Rick Scott. Urge him to bring Ward, Sarras, McClellan and McCallister to justice!

Stop export of Irish greyhounds to their deaths in China

The fight to close the Canidrome, the world’s deadliest dog track, continues! The Macau Canidrome is China’s only legal dog track and thousands of innocent Australian greyhounds have been sent there to be used and killed since 1963.  Thankfully, the export of greyhounds to Macau was suspended in December when Australian airlines Qantas and Cathay Pacific refused to fly any more greyhounds to the region. No greyhounds had been sent to the Canidrome since that time.  Until now. Sadly, three greyhounds arrived in Hong Kong for transfer to Macau on March 16.  Six more came packed in shipping crates on April 15.  These are Irish dogs, the latest in a long line of four-legged victims who will soon die at a true slaughterhouse for greyhounds.  The Macau Canidrome greyhound track is a place where no dog gets out alive. Previously, hundreds of dogs were imported from Australia each year, killed at a rate of thirty per month. There is no adoption program and only one dog, a greyhound named Brooklyn photographed by GREY2K USA Worldwide in 2011, is reportedly being kept alive to avoid public outcry.  We must now work harder than ever to stop this cruelty with new victims from Ireland! In 2012, the Irish Department of Agriculture issued a policy against racing dog exports to Asian countries and emphatically stated that the plan offered by the Irish Greyhound Board or Bord na gCon “...does not provide sufficient assurance that adequate provision would be made to safeguard the health and welfare of greyhounds in China at the end of their racing life." Meanwhile, gambling revenues have declined by more than 60% since 2010 so the conditions under which greyhounds live at the Canidrome have only deteriorated.  Now is the time to remind the Irish government that its policy should be strictly enforced and in fact that commercial greyhound racing should be banned as a matter of law.   Please sign the petition, the innocent greyhounds of Ireland are counting on us to act now!

End Greyhound Racing in the United States

Since 2008, over 1,000 racing greyhounds have died and 13,000 have suffered injuries — including broken legs, crushed skulls, broken necks, paralysis, seizures, and death by electrocution. And these are just the reported injuries and deaths. The vast majority of the 80,000 greyhounds born into dog racing can't even be accounted for.  Five states still  have active greyhound tracks, despite the injuries, deaths, and cruelty surrounding the industry. GREY2K USA Worldwide in conjunction with the ASPCA has released the first comprehensive report on commercial dog racing in the United States, which has found that greyhounds are kept confined in cramped, solitary cages for twenty or more hours each day. They are fed a diet based on cheap, diseased meat, and are routinely deprived of basic veterinary care. And greyhounds are often dosed with dangerous, illegal drugs — some dogs have even tested positive for cocaine. Every year we allow this inhumane activity to continue, more dogs will endure lives of confinement, suffer injuries, and die while racing.  Greyhound racing is illegal in the vast majority of the country. It's time to put an end to it once and for all. Sign this petition and demand that the cruel practice of greyhound racing be brought to an end in the five remaining states where racing continues. Please share our report and lend your support to our efforts to protect greyhounds everywhere.
