Enact Emergency Legislation for Compulsory Central Fire Alarms in Residential Tower Blocks

Emergency legislation should be passed immediately requiring compulsory fitting or retrofitting of central fire alarm systems in every residential tower block within the UK. The members of parliament that are elected to govern have, above all else, a requirement to ensure public safety. Following the avoidable tragedy at Grenfell Tower, Theresa May has called for a Public Inquiry into the incident. This petition proposes that instead of waiting for the conclusions of said inquiry, of which there will be many, this small and necessary step can be taken immediately and potentially save many lives.  There was no central fire alarm system within Grenfell Tower. According to The Building Regulations 2010 Fire Safety Approved Document B with regards to "British Standard - BS 5839-6:2013 - Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings - Code of practice" the requirement for fire alarms does not include communal areas of blocks of flats. I cannot stress enough the importance of this small and economically achievable improvement that can be made immediately using emergency legislation. This legislation could then be amended at a later date to include the recommendations resulting from the inquiry.

Petition to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick

MET POLICE MUST SWIFTLY INVESTIGATE GRENFELL FIRE AND ARREST SUSPECTS

WE URGE METROPOLITAN POLICE COMMISSIONER CRESSIDA DICK TO VIGOROUSLY PURSUE THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATHS OF 79+ PEOPLE IN THE GRENFELL TOWER FIRE AND TO SWIFTLY ARREST THOSE SUSPECTED OF INVOLVEMENT How many days have now passed since the horrific night of Wednesday 14th June, 2017 when at least 79 were killed in London’s Grenfell Tower fire? In that time, how many incriminating emails and documents may have been deleted or shredded? We are concerned that, up until now (Sunday 25th June) and as far as we are aware, there have been no arrests, seizure of documents, sealing of offices or freezing of accounts. It took two days for manslaughter arrests to be made in the 2004 Morecombe beach disaster, and one day only in the 2012 Costa Concordia sinking—both led to successful prosecutions. We, as artists and curators—colleagues of the gifted photographer Khadija Saye, who worked with her in the Diaspora Pavilion in Venice this year, were devastated to learn that our treasured and beloved sister was killed in the fire, along with her mother Mary Mende. We were heartened by the bravery and skill of the emergency services, as well as the outpouring of love and support from citizen volunteers—including those from amongst our number who were traumatised as they sought to help Khadija, her family and neighbours in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. This apparently predictable inferno has caused considerable grief and suffering. From the multiple reports of previous warnings, criminal culpability appears to be at the root of this entirely preventable tragedy. Even the Chancellor of the Exchequer said the building was illegally clad with a banned highly flammable material. To forestall the danger of obstruction and maximise the likelihood of a successfulprosecution, a robust, transparent, criminal investigation needs to be pursued and must include the following: -swift collection of all evidence-sealing of offices-seizure of documents-freezing of accounts-swift arrest of suspects In solidarity with the local residents, the Fire Brigades Union, Justice 4 Grenfell and other supporters of Grenfell, we are resolute that action be delayed no further. THIS MUST HAPPEN NOW to avoid repeating the legal travesties and the long-suffering pain caused to those hurt in the Hillsborough and Stephen Lawrence scandals. We demand immediate action in pursuit of justice for all those killed in the Grenfell Tower fire.
