Support Excused Absences For Sarasota Students to Attend The Next Global Climate Strike
On the morning of Friday, April 24th, 2020, students from across Sarasota County will meet at the Unconditional Surrender Statue to strike for better climate policies. We understand the importance and gift of education, but first we must secure a livable future in order to broaden our skills and use them to help shape the world as graduated adults. This is why we are asking the Sarasota County School Board to: 1. Refrain from any disciplinary action against any students who participate in legitimate climate strike activities during the week April 20th-24th. 2. Designate April 24th as a no-test day to reinforce a stance of supporting such action. 3. Allow students to share information about the climate strikes in school as appropriate. 4. Meet respectfully with students when requested during this week of action and beyond to address the climate crisis within Sarasota County.
Petition to Time
Name Greta Thunberg as ‘Time Person of the Year’
Let’s make this headline and photo ^^ a reality! TIME Magazine will announce the 2019 Person of the Year at the start of December. The magazine’s annual tradition features a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year". I believe this award should go to Greta Thunberg this year. I need your signature today to put public pressure on TIME Magazine to make this decision well before the magazine goes to print. Please sign my petition today. Greta has become the face of a generation of kids, like me, who are taking action to save the planet. She is a symbol of the millions of youth who are taking the future into our own hands when adults in power continually fail to act. My name is Jerome and I am a 17-year-old climate justice advocate. I strike every Friday in front of the White House as a part of the FridaysForFuture movement, and I am a member of the international organizing team. Greta Thunberg is a huge inspiration to me as she sparked an un-ignorable global movement that has mobilized millions of young people to hold our world leaders accountable and demand real action to stymie the climate crisis. There is no one more deserving of 2019 Time Person of the Year than Greta. If you agree, add your voice today. The FridaysForFuture strikes are an important and needed shock to the status quo to make the world aware of the scale and speed of the climate crisis; they shine a light on the fact that our current approach to stopping this crisis is not working and that revolution and unprecedented intergovernmental collaboration is the only appropriate path forward to a sustainable and survivable future. The Fridays for Future Movement is a representation of the scale of global camaraderie that is needed to save ourselves from catastrophic climate breakdown. Our movement is unveiling the curtain to the ugliness of the fossil fuel industry and the nations that lack the moral clarity, political courage, and maturity to act in the best interest of the future of humanity. Greta is more than an inspiring leader for the climate movement. She is a symbol of the millions of youth who are taking the future into our own hands when adults in power continually fail to act.
