Congress: Stop Promoting Fluoridation
In 2012, Harvard researchers published a systemic review and meta-analysis implicating fluoride as a potential neurotoxin affecting the developing brain. [source: https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/1104912/] Three years later, in December 2015, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) admitted "the existing literature is limited in its ability to evaluate potential neurocognitive effects of fluoride in people associated with the current U.S. Public Health Service drinking water guidance (0.7 mg/L)." [source] The NTP then outlined a plan to study the extent of fluoride’s impact on children's neurodevelopment. Why is the Department of Health and Human Services still recommending the addition of fluoride to the public water supply while toxicologists in the National Toxicology Program admit we do not have a clear understanding of its neurotoxic effect on children? When water fluoridation was first endorsed by government dentists seventy years ago, we didn’t realize the effect chronic exposure to toxic chemicals can have on long term health. We had to learn the hard way that chemicals such as lead, mercury, asbestos, and DDT are more dangerous than we originally thought. Given this history, the prudent course of action is to stop endorsing public water fluoridation until our leading toxicologists (not dentists) fully study its safety. Here’s how I became interested in fluoride. Nearly all my life, I drank fluoridated water without questioning the health authorities who said it was good for me. But when I spent a year in Scotland as a Fulbright scholar, I experienced the dramatic difference it makes living in a non-fluoridated country. Over 95 percent of Western Europe does not fluoridate its water supply. For me, the major difference living without fluoridated water was the disappearance of the cystic acne that plagued me throughout my adult life. I eventually figured out that fluoride was the cause of my acne. Sensitivity to fluoride is not an uncommon condition, it’s just not commonly diagnosed because few people understand the extent to which fluoride has infiltrated our modern lives. In addition to public drinking water and toothpaste, we are exposed to fluoride through fluoride-based pesticides that accumulate in fruit, vegetables, and even chicken nuggets and lunch meat, as well as fluorinated pharmaceuticals like Prozac and Paxil. When I started researching fluoride, I was shocked to learn that according to the CDC, 90 percent of the fluoride added to the water supply is hydrofluorosilicic acid, an unfiltered byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry. Fluoride is considered a pollutant when released through factory smokestacks but after fluoride pollution devastated thousands of acres of agricultural land in the 1950s, regulators restricted its release into the atmosphere. This is the same industrial byproduct that is now packaged and sold to local water utilities for addition to public water supplies. The research on fluoride has been flagrantly skewed by corporate polluters who had a strong self-interest in proving the safety and effectiveness of fluoridation. In a comprehensive review conducted in June 2015 by the Cochrane Group, a U.K.-based organization described in Newsweek as "the gold standard of scientific rigor in assessing effectiveness of public health policies," reviewers concluded: "There is very little contemporary evidence, meeting the review's inclusion criteria, that has evaluated the effectiveness of water fluoridation for the prevention of caries." Data from the World Health Organization shows the decline in tooth decay occurred equally in fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries throughout the western world as nutrition improved. Is the questionable benefit of a reduction in cavities worth the risk of impairing our children’s mental development? And what about Erin Brockovich's argument that the use of the public water system to disperse compulsory mass medication is ethically and fundamentally wrong? The NTP intends to study fluoride’s role in cancer, too. In 1977, Congress ordered a similar study regarding fluoride and cancer. When the results were finally published over a decade later, a senior toxicologist at EPA's Office of Drinking Water was fired when he concluded the study indicates fluoride is a possible carcinogen. He was reinstated in 1994 under the Whistleblower Protection Act but his concerns about fluoride were never addressed. In June 2000, senior representatives from the EPA Headquarters Union of professional employees testified in front of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Drinking Water to call for a moratorium on fluoridation and further review of the cancer study. Their warnings were not heeded. It’s time we tell Congress we want them to follow through with these recommendations. Please join me in asking the current members of the Senate Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Drinking Water to stop the promotion of public water fluoridation by the Department of Health and Human Services until toxicologists fully study its negative health effects. Leading fluoridation advocates in Canada and New Zealand have reversed their endorsement of fluoride. How long will it take before health authorities in the United States realize public water fluoridation is a costly mistake? We cannot wait for U.S. health authorities to see past decades of undue corporate influence. Our government needs to stop endorsing public water fluoridation now. *Thank you to city councilor Ari Herzog for permission to use a photo of the fluoride they add to the water in his town of Newburyport, MA.

Fluoride Free Chapel Hill Carrboro
On February 2, 2017, there was a fluoride over-feed caused by negligence on the part of those who were managing the chemical compounds being added to our water at the OWASA treatment plant. This brought to light a problem that some have been advocating against since 2012, asking OWASA to look at the science regarding adding fluoride to our water in the first place. The incident could have been much worse, as they have stated that none of the contaminated water ended up in anyone's water supply. However, the fact is that hydrofluorosilicic acid (a known toxic chemical that is a by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry and is NOT pharmaceutical grade) is being added to our drinking water as a medication intended to prevent tooth decay. Orange County does not have a license to practice medicine, nor is it legal to impose medication on people without their consent. Additionally, there has never been a single, randomized controlled trial to demonstrate the effectiveness or SAFETY of water fluoridation. The only studies have been on fluoride applied TOPICALLY to the teeth, not used systemically. Many health concerns have been cited including, but not limited to: thyroid, neurological, lowering of IQ, fluorosis, arthritic symptoms. Please see more at: http://www.fluoridealert.org/50-reasons.htm We have repeatedly presented concerns and objections to OWASA, only to have been dismissed. In 2013, OWASA refused to hear the science and engage in a discussion with the author of "The Case Against Fluoride," Dr. Paul Connett, who travels around the world speaking on this topic. They instead held a meeting that was billed as a fair debate on the subject, with two "experts" who were to be on each side of the issue. They would not allow for any public comment or questions. It was a sham of a debate as the person who was supposedly against fluoridation didn't cite any scientific or medical reports or studies, but just shrugged his shoulders and agreed that it's a good idea to keep fluoridation alive in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. With that, they dismissed those concerned and said they would no longer hear anything on the subject. We were not welcome to future meetings. Once the fluoride overfeed occurred, they opened the floor to public comments and in addition to those of us who participated in the efforts in 2012-13, there were others from the town who also voiced their opposition to the practice, including two former employees/board members of OWASA. The following meeting on March 9 was staged with four people going to the podium in support of the practice of water fluoridation - ALL FROM THE UNC DENTAL SCHOOL. Those from the community who spoke were all in opposition. The board did not ask questions or otherwise respond to a single concern from the citizens of the town and said they would resume the practice of water fluoridation (they had ceased since the incident on Feb 2nd) and would not discuss the matter of fluoridation any further. This is not acceptable. The people of Chapel Hill and Carrboro have a right to know what is going into their water, be able to voice their opinions and be heard. They also ought to have public officials/servants who are willing to read the scientific evidence - not just listen to the propaganda in the form of endorsements that have been used for decades to support this outdated practice. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION, PASS ALONG TO YOUR NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS WHO ARE ON THE OWASA SYSTEM OR WHO EVEN DINE IN CHAPEL HILL/CARRBORO! UPDATE: August 15, 2017 OWASA has taken an unprecedented recess all summer. An audit of the recent history shows that over the past five years they have not cancelled all summer meetings that the public is welcome to petition and comment at. The next meeting was set for Aug 24, where we had organized a campaign to get as many voices there as possible, to petition the OWASA board of directors to not resume putting fluoride in our water. It appears they were aware of this and are continuing to silence public opposition to their decision to continue this practice, ignoring the voices of many in our community, as well as the science showing this is harmful. We are moving forward and will hold a peaceful protest/sit-in at the date, time and location of the meeting, though the OWASA board will not be present to hear our voices. We hope this serves to demonstrate that we have a real determination and plenty of momentum to keep this growing movement strong. We hope all who signed this petition over the past few months will join us at the front of the Chapel Hill Town Hall Building on MLK on August 24 at 7pm. Thank you for your support.

Make Fluoridation a Choice
WATER FLUORIDATION IS THE PRACTICE OF ADDING INDUSTRIAL-GRADE FLUORIDE CHEMICALS TO WATER FOR THE PURPOSE OF PREVENTING TOOTH DECAY. ONE OF THE LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT THIS PRACTICE IS THAT THE UNITED STATES, WHICH FLUORIDATES OVER 70% OF ITS WATER SUPPLIES, HAS MORE PEOPLE DRINKING FLUORIDATED WATER THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED. MOST DEVELOPED NATIONS, INCLUDING ALL OF JAPAN AND 97% OF WESTERN EUROPE, DO NOT FLUORIDATE THEIR WATER. Unlike all other water treatment processes, fluoridation does not treat the water itself, but the person consuming it. The Food & Drug Administration accepts that fluoride is a drug, not a nutrient, when used to prevent disease. By definition, therefore, fluoridating water is a form of mass medication. This is why most western European nations have rejected the practice— because, in their view, the public water supply is not an appropriate place to be adding drugs, particularly when fluoride is readily available for individual use in the form of toothpaste. The most obvious reason to end fluoridation is that it is now known that fluoride's main benefit comes from topical contact with the teeth, not from ingestion. Even the CDC’s Oral Health Division now acknowledges this. There is simply no need, therefore, to swallow fluoride, whether in the water, toothpaste, or any other form. Further, despite early claims that fluoridated water would reduce cavities by 65%, modern large-scale studies show no consistent or meaningful difference in the cavity rates of fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. First, there is no dispute that fluoridation is causing millions of children to develop dental fluorosis, a discoloration of the teeth that is caused by excessive fluoride intake. Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control have even acknowledged that ffluoridation is causing “cosmetically objectionable” ffluorosis on children’s front teeth–an effect that can cause embarrassment and distress at a time of life when physical appearance is the single most important predictor of self-esteem. Second, it is known that fluoridated water caused severe bone disease in dialysis patients up until the late 1970s (prior to dialysis units filtering out fluoride). While dialysis units now filter out the fluoride, research shows that current fluoride exposures are still resulting in dangerously high bone fluoride levels in dialysis patients and patients with other advanced forms of kidney disease. It is unethical to compromise the health of some members in a population to obtain a purported benefit for another — particularly in the absence of these vulnerable members’ knowing consent. The bottom line is water fluoridation has served its purpose in our history at a point in time when dental disease and hygiene were not easily attainable by the vast majority of society. Times have changed and topical fluoride sources are far more easily accessible today than 20, 30, 40 and 50 years ago. Fluoride supplements are available in our toothpaste, mouth wash, oral tablets and solutions. Only 1% of water from our faucets will ever come into contact with the enamel of a human tooth, the other 99% is not even being used for its intended purpose of preventing caries. Even that 1% that will come into contact with teeth, becomes even smaller when ingested, since we now know fluoride only prevents caries topically; therefore any fluoride swallowed will not in fact prevent tooth decay. Let's stop force feeding our population of Hampton Roads fluoride against their will and develope a plan to put medication back into the hands of the Health Department and out of our water!

Fluoride free water supply
Fluoride compounds are purposefully added to water, a process known as fluoridation, and have been since the late 1940s. It’s puzzling since fluoride has never been proven to significantly help in protecting teeth from cavities. Now, nearly 90% of the U.S. population has supplied water through public water systems, and about 67% of those people receive fluoridated water. Fluoride is almost impossible to avoid, even if you actively try to avoid it… its prevalence is astounding. It’s unlikely restaurants are using fluoride free water. Beverage manufacturers all rely on municipal water systems to produce soda, juice, and smoothies. And, this doesn’t even include the fluoride in dental products. When you add all these sources up, it’s easy to see the average person is under heavy attack. Fluoride Exposure Can Have Serious Health Consequences. Many people have been wrongly convinced that fluoride is necessary for dental health. In actuality, fluoride is extremely toxic and fluoride ingestion is one of the most common reasons for calls to Poison Control. The health consequences from fluoride exposure, water or otherwise, can be horrendous… Fluoride is a neurotoxin that could cause damage equivalent to that from a traumatic brain injury; children living in highly fluoridated areas have up to five times greater chance of developing a low IQ compared to those who do not.Fluoride calcifies the pineal gland.Fluoride can affect thyroid and it’s ability to absorb iodine.Fluoride consumption can cause skeletal fluorosis, a condition resulting in weak bones.Research has shown that fluoride exposure can cause early puberty in girls.Higher levels of fluoride correspond to lower fertility rates in both men and women.Areas with high fluoride levels in the water tend to have a higher rate of chronic kidney disease.Research suggests fluoride causes cardiovascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. The Fluoride Action Network reports that, as of May 2013, 43 studies have examined the effect of fluoride on human intelligence.Fluoride may play a role in ADHD and other mental issues, according to research from the Harvard School of Public Health. This petition exists in hope that we can achieve a truly natural and poison free water supply. Water is one of the necessities of life itself and deserves to be enjoyed without the addition of unnatural chemicals and toxic waste. Change starts somewhere, as a matter of fact, it starts with you. Be the change, and we can change the world together, for a better future.

Clean Water is a Right— End Fluoridation
We, the people, demand the repeal of legislation mandating the fluoridation of the state's municipal water supplies. (KRS 211.190(11) and KAR 902 115.010). The Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency have both classified fluoride as a neurotoxin. Fluoride exposure has been linked to a myriad chronic health problems ranging from dental fluorosis and bone disorders, to low intelligence, genetic deformities, endocrine disruption, thyroid disorders, dementia, diabetes and cancer. Fluoride is a nuclear waste byproduct. It is more toxic than lead. As such, its introduction into the public water supply is tantamount to mass poisoning. This has led many countries around the world to ban the practice on ethical grounds. Hundreds of municipalities across the United States have done so as well. For the State of Kentucky to require the introduction of a known toxin into the water supply, in light of the evidence, amounts to a betrayal of the public trust. Clean water is a right. End fluoridation now.
