Petition to United Nations

Rettet die Erde – Geburtenstopp Jetzt! * Save the Earth – Don’t give Birth!

Petition to The Scientific Community

We call for more sustainable & diverse scientific conferences!

Towards more sustainable and diverse scientific exchange The disruptive impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on our lives are not easily quantified, but one among these that merits attention is the way in which the virus has changed the scientific conferences that took place last year. What are the lessons we can take away from these changes in the future? While it is natural to assume that most are hoping to go back to their pre-pandemic lives, it can also be imagined that the political measures have created an opportunity to reconsider our long-established and unquestioned habits. For instance, decreased activity made it possible to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide [1, 2] and to lower pollution levels in many areas around the world [3–8]. Not only that, diversity in science has also received a boost by enabling more attendees and contributions through online conferences, see e.g. [9]. These advances are still tentative however, and as such there is a risk of strong rebound effects [10–13] and falling back into old habits unless action is taken to solidify the progress that has already been made. In the wake of all the media coverage of the pandemic [14] it is increasingly likely that issues of equality and climate change could be superseded in the public awareness, and a significant amount remains to be achieved regarding global policy changes [15]. Meanwhile, the window of opportunity is rapidly shrinking [16, 17]. In 2021 the American Physical Society March Meeting was entirely remote for the first time in its history, and given that, our impressions were positive. We agree that a virtual conference can never fully replace in-person meetings, and as expected for a first attempt, minor technical and organizational challenges affected the proceedings of the normal March Meeting experience. Despite this, the meeting demonstrated the clear future potential for successful international scientific conferences beyond the traditional model. By treating online conferences not as a last minute stop-gap but as an equal alternative, we are confident that new ideas and resources to resolve current weaknesses would be quickly discovered by the community at large. A very creative example of a progressive solution was the implementation of virtual reality at the Neutrino2020 conference. The case for change in our established paradigms becomes even more compelling when considering the following: Global heating. International conferences and long-distance travel are inextricably linked, and researchers are likely to exhaust their full annual sustainable CO2 budget of 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per year by taking a round-trip flight [replace footnote]. In contrast, video-conferencing reduces CO2 emissions by a factor of at least 14 [19] and up to 3000 [20]. Even under worst case assumptions, virtual meetings are more eco-friendly for traveling distances larger than 400 km [21]. Having now definitively proven the man-made greenhouse effect [22], can the scientific community urge for climate measures while flying around the globe with the sole purpose of discussing with each other? This avoidable own-goal plays into the hands of cynics and climate-deniers [23]. Equality, diversity, inclusion. Fully in-person conferences cannot guarantee the same level of diversity, inclusion and equality that we have seen with virtual conferences. Here, we are not only referring to monetary aspects related to the wealth of different institutes but also to work-life-balance and academic hierarchy. Global health risks and species conservation. International travel and our connected way of living has increased the risk of novel zoonoses and the prevalence of diseases in general [24–28]. Covid-19 is only the latest example and it is all but guaranteed that similar future pandemics will occur if we do not change our behavior. Fortunately, the issue of international scientific conferences has already received a lot of attention [29–35]. As an alternative, we support any option where fully remote attendance is equally catered for, i.e. all tutorials, sessions, exhibitions etc. are accessible online. Since certain aspects of the conference cannot be replicated virtually, we suggest a hybrid solution where virtual participation of non-locals is promoted by significantly smaller conference fees compared to the on-site participation fee. Developing such new forms of scientific conferencing is certainly a challenge—yet, we are convinced that the benefits are undeniable: Let us be part of the movement to take responsibility and establish more sustainable scientific conferences. Change is coming, it is on us to take action now. Be part of the movement towards a more sustainable and diverse scientific exchange and sign our open letter to show your support. Save the Wagenburg Osnabrück, our home!

The WabOS (short for Wagenburg Osnabrück, meaning “wagon burg” / “trailer park”) is an alternative community project existing at the address Am Hirtenhaus in Osnabrück (Germany) since 1997. We are (+/-) 10 people of differing ages, who live in trailers reconstructed by ourselves, at a site that represents an urban green oasis. Here, we try a different form of community living, without the social isolation and separation that prevail in the nowadays society, also because of conventional residential circumstances. Together, we organize events and parties, and we take decisions according to the principle of consensus. Each voice counts in an assembly where everyone is considered. The site is leased from the Municipality of Osnabrück by the means of our legal association WabOS e. V. The site is not developed, meaning that we produce our own solar energy and use collected rain water, except for the little amount of drinking water that we have to get from elsewhere. Although we are living here for 19 years by now, the town's council is currently planning to convert our home into a residential building plot. Just a short while ago we had to be fearing the (im-) possibility of a removal of our wagenburg in the frame of the construction of a beltway that had been among earlier plans. Now, the menacing situation has gotten into a new shape: while the Western beltway has been a politically highly discussed topic, the council's parties however seem to agree regarding the plans of residential building, as allegedly, more residence areas are needed. Meanwhile, they overlook that we already constitute such (affortable!) space for living, and that in this town as much as elsewhere, there is a sufficient number of empty dwellings. That's why it becomes clear that the council has no social motivation, but that it is rather the quite high prices of plots in this part of the town that entice them to sell the ground. Local policy's self-made constraints of a continuous generation of population influx in order to gain euros for the city treasury do not aim to assure every inhabitant of the town has a place to stay. This political attitude, whose only objective is the valorization of assets, virtually turns us into second class citizens and shows that there is ever less space left for so-called subcultures. The site in question offers a diverse habitat to animals, plants and humans, shaped by ancient house gardens, a formerly managed meadow with scattered old fruit trees of different sorts (“Streuobstwiese” / traditional orchard) and a precious (mesophile) grassland. Our wagenburg is excellently integrated into this landscape without endangering these biotopes. It is ever more important to develop strategies that counter the consistent extermination of ecological niches and the on-going destruction of our environment and that hence should also imply ideas about new forms of housing and living, such as ours. We, as the WabOS, want to stay at home at this beautiful place and are going to advocate the preservation of the site. Support us with your signatures, that we are going to hand over to the Municipality of Osnabrück!

Petition to Joseph Robinette Biden

Fair internet would protect American jobs, businesses and the best interests of children!

The Internet grows and grows and thus occupies an ever larger part of our lives. One reason for this growth was initially the numerous possibilities and the FREEDOM that the Internet offered. Meanwhile, online trading is very important to our economy. At the beginning - what is now the big Internet site - there was a good idea that was the cornerstone of the success of many corporations. However, with the influence of investors, these ideas have changed. INTERNET TODAY Today's internet is at risk: Jobs in the US and worldwide whole industries and teenage health. For more information, see: https://apoos.com/criticism-of-the-internet/ THE POWER The market power of the Internet is in the hands of a few Internet companies. These are already generating sales of several hundred billion US dollars annually. Some of them even have cash reserves of over $ 100 billion. As one could see from a hearing before the US Congress, these companies do not seem to get enough. https://www.politico.com/news/agenda/2020/07/28/agenda-amazon-facebook-google-apple-hearing-383612 User under pressure to act! Regardless of the area in which you are active, if a search engine devalues your site and thus your product range, you will make less sales. If your focus is online or online trading, this can be life-threatening. In theory, at least, you have two options. The first is to forego sales if you can afford it. The second possibility is to buy your visibility back with the help of advertising programs offered by search engines or social networks. A few years ago you would have said that the few cents per click are not bad. Today, however, the few cents have turned into a few euros per click in many areas. Of course, these costs can then be passed back to the consumer, but what does that actually mean? Due to its market power (too little competition), a company / search engine / social community has the opportunity not only to determine the price for the survival of a company, but also to destroy it, e.g. in which the company concerned is not allowed to advertise or the prices are correspondingly high. In my view, there is no transparency here. IT'S EVEN Worse A search engine gradually brings its own product areas onto the market and thus effectively deprives the American economy of the lucrative business areas and thus further strengthens its position of power and profits. FUTURE What will the future bring? If the current situation does not change, these companies will continue to ask for any amount! If the greed of these platforms continues to rise, not only individual jobs or companies are endangered, but entire industries! Personally, that makes me very thoughtful. SOLUTION I. I see one solution in changing the competitive situation. We need new platforms that on the one hand offer competitive functions and do not neglect the aspect of the free internet. II. Implement the catalog of measures here in PDF format MY SHARE I myself have already started two attempts (2008 & 2011 - 2017) to launch a corresponding platform. The concept for my fair all-in-one community or social media & marketing platform can be found at https://APOOS.com. By the way, I have self-financed the first two attempts, for the third attempt I need financial support. CLAIM OF THIS PETITION In order to equate market power and to reduce a possible risk to jobs and companies, I consider the following point to be useful: I: Provision of funding for the APOOS project by the US government. II: Review and implementation of our catalog of measures to protect American jobs! IS THAT YOUR OPINION? - We urgently need more fair competition to protect jobs- To reduce manipulation- and to reduce the market power of the major Internet companies. Then support this petition. I thank you!
