Petition to Philippine College of Physicians
Do not recognize the Philippine College of Diabetology.
Endocrinologists are specially trained doctors who take care of patients with hormonal disorders. These include diabetes, thyroid diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, metabolic disorders, menopause, hypertension, lipid disorders, infertility, short stature and cancers of endocrine glands. In the Philippines, endocrinologists are Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) board-certified internists who complete two years of endocrinology fellowship in hospitals accredited by the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (PSEM), and are certified as diplomates by successfully passing written and oral examinations conducted by the PSEM Specialty Board of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism. Diabetology is the clinical science of diabetes mellitus, its diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. It is clearly a CLINICAL field of study under endocrinology. In the Philippines, diabetologists take up an M.S. in Internal Medicine (Major in Diabetology) along with some clinical exposure rather than fellowship training. Diabetes Philippines (DP) Inc. seeks to establish a Philippine College of Diabetology with a Philippine Specialty Board of Diabetology to certify “diabetologists.” As the PSEM is a recognized sub-specialty society of the PCP, DP Inc. is unquestionably violating the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Code for Professional Specialization Section 2.2.5 which states that a sub-specialty should represent no other society of the same sub-specialty holding charter with the PMA. Under the same PMA Code for Professional Specialization, Section 2.2.6 states that a sub-specialty society must be recognized by the Specialty Society of the Division, which in this case for Medicine is the Philippine College of Physicians. Join us in asking the PCP to not recognize the Philippine College of Diabetology as a subspecialty society under the PCP. Diabetology is not a separate subspecialty but a recognized component of the practice of endocrinology, which is already represented by the PSEM under the PCP.
