Remove Columbus Statue in Los Angeles

We the undersigned support the removal of the Christopher Columbus statue located at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles. We believe it is high time that the City of Los Angeles is more inclusive of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles the Tongva, who were nearly annihilated through genocide, and the growing Chicano -"Latino" community whom have a history deep in our city and ancestral connections to the indigenous people of California. What this statue represents to our community as well as many other colonial monuments is violence, racism, marginalization, and the continued denial of the genocide of indigenous people.  A past we still struggle with because we are reminded of it daily with the honoring of Christopher Columbus in Grand Park. Columbus killed millions of indigenous people through slavery and policies of systematic extermination. Under his rule his men hanged indigenous people in mass, roasted them at the stake, hacked children to be used as dog food.  Columbus was a slaver of indigenous people and facilitated the sexual exploitation of indigenous women and girls as young as nine; He profited from the pain of our ancestors and this is being commemorated in Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles. Columbus is the architect of a genocide that is comparable to Hitler’s “Final Solution”. Let us also not forget that Columbus is the father of the transatlantic slave trade! A crime against humanity that started human trafficking across the Atlantic. The violent and forced transportation of millions of people from Africa to the Western Hemisphere that lasted over three centuries. October 12, 1492 marks the beginning of our Holocaust with the arrival of Christopher Columbus. 100 million Indigenous people were massacred on this continent. A holocaust were 95% of our ancestors were exterminated.  It is the largest and most atrocious genocide ever committed in the history of humanity. As descendants of the 5% that survived this genocide known as Mexicans, “Central Americans”, “South Americans”, “Native Americans” and those in solidarity with them are asking the city of Los Angeles to stop honoring the man who started this genocide, that we as indigenous people are still under, known as Christopher Columbus.  The statue of Columbus represents his legacy of mass murdering, raping, pillaging, torturing, and the enslaving Indigenous men, women, children, and babies of the western hemisphere.   We believe that the Los Angeles City Council going on the historic decision to recognize Indigenous people on Indigenous People's Day has the understanding and would be open to finally removing these monuments that commemorated the genocide of indigenous people and replace them with monuments to our Indigenous ancestors or Chicano ancestors. There are about 600 monuments of Christopher Columbus erected all over the world and it is time to show the world that Los Angeles will do the morally right thing and will no longer honor genocide by replacing the statue of Columbus with the statue of an Indigenous or Chicano hero of California.  We propose the following heroes who resisted the injustices of their time: Toypurina Kintpuash "Captain Jack" Tiburcio Vásquez Joaquín Murrieta This petition will be delivered to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Council. Stop Capital University Concealed Carry

The #CapFam is greater than just Capital University students, staff, and administration. It includes the community of Bexley, Capital University alumni, family members, our network of community leaders & partners across Columbus. We, a coalition of organizations, students, staff and the greater Bexley community, believes that SB 1, erroneously titled “No More Victims,” misrepresents the University’s purpose and directly contradicts the values of the organizations and students herein represented. This coalition supports genuine efforts to improve the safety and representation of survivors of campus violence. We call on our peers and community members to join us in opposition to the spirit and intent of this legislation. We, as members of the #CapFam, adamantly oppose the legislation known as SB 1 regarding concealed carry on campus and publicly address the following concerns with the said legislation. The blatant disregard for student interest in the creation of this legislation is evident by the lack of student input and open forums regarding the content of SB 1 prior to its proposal to Student Government. Not only are student interests being disregarded, but the proposal is a misrepresentation of university values. As an institution with purpose, Capital University challenges members of its community to ask, think, and lead. Without the input of students and by only a small number of students speaking on behalf of all students, we feel these values are being misrepresented. This legislation is inappropriately produced and proposed to the Student Government Senate Legislation drafted an hour prior to the Senate meeting without ample time for research by voting senators and without the knowledge of absent senators has no place in our representative body. By being a part of the Capital University community, students and faculty also belong to the Bexley community at large. Decisions of this magnitude and controversial nature affect the Bexley community, as well as our own. Calling for a vote regarding concealed carry without research and consultation from the Bexley community is damaging to the relationship the University holds with community members. This proposal and the language used in it are damaging to survivors of all forms of violence. The proposal calls for the safety of students while using damaging terminology and without appropriate agency for survivors. Survivors should not be silenced and spoken for but should be given a platform to advocate for their needs and cared for by our community. Speaking for one survivor should not be twisted into the views of all survivors. The legislation proposed cites affirmative research without citing research in refutation of the presented argument. Thoughtful, intentional legislation includes research and debate from all sides. With the disregard for proper procedure and lack of ample time prior to the vote, sufficient research could not be presented or discussed. Rigorous, educated, and research-based discussion should follow controversial, sensitive legislation such as that proposed.  We, the signers of this petition, believe that an integral part of Capital University's purpose is to remain a safe, open, and involved member of the Bexley community. Stand by us and oppose this legislation.  Sincerely,  The #CapFam

Petition to Dan

Bring Costco to Columbus, Georgia/Ft. Benning!!

The purpose of this petition is to give any (current or future) residents of the Columbus Metropolitan Area a chance to voice their desire to have Costco build a warehouse here. #ColumbusCostco The petition has been shared with/emailed to the mayor of Columbus, the local news paper, local news stations, and is being shared across Facebook. If you see this on social media, please share it publicly so it can reach as many people as possible! The MOST DIRECT WAY to tell Costco you want them to build here is to contact the real estate broker for Costco. This is just as crucial as signing the petition itself!! His name is Dan Venable. He is the sole person responsible for deciding whether or not Costco will come here to Columbus. Dan Venable's office phone number is 571-434-0604 x314 Call him and leave him voicemails. Make sure you tell him your name and why you want Costco to come here! Ask him to PLEASE call Chris from JMC Flatrock Partners, the local real estate company who purchased the old swift mill site. Then ask others to do the same. If you do not hear back from Dan, by all means follow up with him. Costco Wholesale has been looking into building a warehouse here in Columbus, Georgia since about 2012. Columbus has since grown to become the second largest city in Georgia with a population of 200,000. Columbus is also home to Fort Benning, where there are over 100,000 active-duty military, family members, reserve component soldiers, retirees, and civilian employees on a daily basis. Fort Benning can be a very transient area as people move in and out as they receive orders, etc. A lot of these people are from locations that already have a Costco, a point that has been made to them on their Facebook page. There have been SEVERAL news articles posted online over the last 2 or 3 years where readers were asked which retailer they wanted to see they was not currently in Columbus. If you are reading this you can guess who the number one choice was........ Costco. These articles have been given to Costco. Recently a large plot of land that has sat vacant for years was recently purchased in May/June 2017. This was the Old Swift Mill site in Midland. The land will be developed into what will be known as "Midland Commons". It is expected that Costco would go here if they decide to build. One of the owners of the company that purchased the land who is talking directly to Costco has said he could use some help in convincing Costco to build here. A local news paper ran an article discussing what could possibly go here. You can guess what the number one answer was that people gave..... Costco. Despite all of the above information, despite our population and income, Costco still has not decided to pull the trigger on building a warehouse here. Costco's Facebook team says they know about the posts on their wall from Columbus residents who want them here. They know about the news paper articles. What they do not know is how many residents actually want them here. It is high time they find out. One of the biggest things making this so urgent is that there are only TWO PLACES left in Columbus where Costco could build a warehouse. One is the new Midland Commons site and the other is by Williams Road. If Costco does not build in one of these two places. Costco will NEVER be able to come here. Space has run out and time is close to running out. If you want a Costco in Columbus, Georgia then THIS will be the final chance you have to make that known. SIGN. THIS. PETITION. Our collective voice really is THE LAST thing we can do to convince them. If they decide not to build here, they will NOT get another chance. Whether or not Costco build here is NOT up to the mayor, NOT up to the developers that purchased the old swift mill site, NOT up to the local news papers. It is 100% up to COSTCO whether or not to build here... 100% Costco. Whether you live in the Columbus area or not, please reach out to the following news media outlets to help us get more people aware of the petition. LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN! Let's show Costco that the second largest city in Georgia is not just another city who wants a Costco. MAKE SOME NOISE! If you want Costco Wholesale to FINALLY build a warehouse here, then SIGN. THIS. PETITION and get others to do the same! Reach out to the media and Dan as much as you can #SignAndShare #ColumbusCostco Thank you!
