Petition to Beyond Blue, Department of Education

Support the mental health of our children NOW.

Support the mental health of our children NOW. According to the Australian Institute of health and welfare: In 2013–14, an estimated 314,000 children aged 4–11 (almost 14%) experienced a mental disorder. Boys were more commonly affected than girls (17% compared with 11%).Anxiety disorders were the second most common disorders among all children (6.9%), and the most common among girls (6.1%). Implementing frameworks within schools to educate children is a start, as well as providing professional development courses to teachers. But come on Australia, this is not enough. Speaking as a preservice teacher who has the first-hand experience in schools and understands the demands of a 21st-century teacher, WE NEED MORE! Our kids need more! They are our next generation, and if we don't begin to make changes now, these statistics will continue to rise, and our children have minimal hope for their future. I have worked in early childhood settings for years and begun spending more time within schools. During this time, I have witnessed the impact of fostering positive relationships. Small gestures, acknowledgment, and a set of ears can be the whole world of change for this child. We need mentor programs to start happening! We need REAL people in schools supporting these kids! We need PASSIONATE and dedicated people to drive this change! People like ME or YOU, people who have dealt with mental illnesses, and the stigma that follows. Every teacher aspires to support each child in their class while filling them with confidence and the necessary tools for them to conquer the big scary out there. Mental illness is silent, we need to focus on every kid, just because they have no demonstrated signs of mental illness, how do we know there isn't something eating them up on the inside?Teachers struggle to fit in time to plan engaging lessons, then deliver these lessons, conduct assessments to then reach curriculum goals for the 30 children in their class. What good is literacy and numeracy skills for a future of struggling to get out of bed due to a debilitating mental illness no self-belief? Let's make a change. There are plenty of community agencies out there trying to make a difference! I am disappointed in the lack of attention to an issue that is killing our nation. I urge these agencies to contact me, let's collaborate let's make a difference. Let's make the change now for a brighter future.

Petition to Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook should close down anti-vaccination pages and groups.

Facebook groups act as an echo chamber for vaccine myths and misconceptions, endangering our population. There are hundreds of anti-vaccine groups on Facebook, all acting as echo-chambers, reinforcing vaccine myths and reinforcing these ideas with no scientific or medical basis. Worldwide we are seeing vaccination rates drop and some diseases are re-emerging. There are measles outbreaks in the US and France, where vaccination rates are particularly low in certain areas. If anyone joins these anti-vaccine groups and presents an argument using the weight of scientific and medical consensus, they are first ridiculed, then blocked. This only continues to damage science in the eyes of parents who are listening to these myths and ignoring their doctors. Because Facebook is providing these closed, festering locations for these misconceptions to grow and strengthen, it is Facebook that is best placed to take action. Facebook has a social responsibility to ensure fake news is not spread. Vaccine myths are fake news and only serve to damage the reputation of science and medicine in society. Facebook must remove these groups immediately.UPDATE: On 7 March 2019 Facebook announced it would remove anti-vaccine groups from search results and reject any ads which contain vaccine misinformation. This is a great step forward and will make a real difference. However, with the groups and pages remaining we still have the echo chamber effect. There are still hundreds of thousands (possibly millions) of people in these groups who will still be subject to harmful misinformation and will still be able to share the content across social media.Until the groups and pages are removed, the echo chamber effect remains and vaccine misinformation is fortified.Facebook, remove these groups and pages.

Adolescent Mental Heath Needs Addressing

My daughter is 15. And suffers from a long term Mental Illness. We have been involved with our local CAMHS service now for over 12 months with very little improvement, in fact our situation is worsening. We attend individual weekly sessions and she see’s a psychiatrist every 6 weeks for a meds review. In this whole time we have been ill informed and kept mostly in the dark about the care and treatment my daughter needs. We have not been given any helpful strategies to better assist her needs or to even better understand her condition, despite our numerous requests. My daughter self harms, she cuts deep into her wrists, has overdosed on medication and expresses often a desire of wanting to die. My daughter is actively suicidal. We have been admitted to ED at least 6 times this year with her clearly disclosing a want to die, yet she is sent home a few hours later with our local CAMHS service to follow up the next day. It seems to be a cycle that we are all to familiar with now, except with each presentation to the ED getting progressively worse. I have been reaching out and screaming for help, for more services to help us get through this, but we are constantly told that there is nothing more available to us. How is this so? There needs to be more intensive services, inpatient with the focus on getting better help not used as a holding bay until the suicidal thoughts go away, there needs to be more support for guardians and care givers, there needs to be more done in our community to assist the people with a Mental Illness, there needs to be more options then the useless ones currently in place. Without this I fear my daughter will die.

Petition to Julie Anne Genter

Two children died while cycling on New Zealand roads last year.  One child died while cycling on a school journey just days after the election and another died while out cycling on a weekend.  Another child was seriously injured while cycling home from school.  This should not be happening.  With a rising road toll, these sad deaths and injuries are concerning. Lucinda Rees from NZ School Speeds has set up a petition to urge the future Transport Minister to put rules in place that protect children on our roads as they did in the Netherlands in the 70s. In the Netherlands parents combined as a pressure group in 1973 to campaign for safer roads for children calling it ‘Stop de Kindermoord’ (‘Stop the Child Murder’), after over 3000 people died on their roads, many of them children. This forced the hand of their Government to put rules in place and the now famous cycleways being built. The Netherlands is now a world leader in road safety and has one of the lowest road tolls per capita in the word. “Here in New Zealand road safety panels have been set up and recommendations have been made, but little has been acted upon by our Government, leading to deaths of innocent road users.  Not everyone can or wants to drive their children to school.” says Lucinda Rees, who with NZ School Speeds campaigns for consistent speed limits outside schools and safe roads for children. “The driving culture needs to change and this will only come about if pedestrians and cyclists are welcomed on our roads, with rules that protect them.” While it takes a long time to build cycle lanes, would the Transport Minister please consider introducing rules to make school journeys safer for children: A mandatory cyclist passing gap of 1 metre for vehicles travelling at up to 60km/h and 1.5 metres for vehicles traveling above 60km/h Consistent speed limits outside schools of 30km/h maximum at peak times as recommended by the World Health Organisation Speed limits outside schools in rural areas can be up to 100km/h and we have no consistent speed limits outside schools at peak times. Children who walk or cycle to school should be guaranteed a safe speed limit outside schools, since it is a place where they are easily distracted. Rees says: “There is a 20km/h school bus rule, but no consistent rule for the many children coming and going from school. These inconsistencies are unacceptable. “Please stand up for our children and bring these simple yet important rules in place to make roads safe for all our vulnerable road users by changing the culture of drivers. “Our thoughts are with all those involved in the recent deaths and injuries. We must stop child murder on our roads. Please help make this happen by signing the petition.”
