Petition to Braintree Local Highways Panel, Councillor Robert Mitchell
As a pedestrian I rely on crossings all the time. Having recently moved to Braintree I have found one zebra crossing in particular to be more dangerous than others I've experienced. This is how we make a difference. On the Coggeshall Road there's a double roundabout by Sainsbury's petrol station, at which there are three zebra crossings, two of which are incredibly dangerous. My proposal is to turn these zebra crossings (or pedestrian crossings) into toucan crossings (one with traffic lights for both bikes and pedestrians) so that we don't have to worry anymore. I honestly cannot count how many close calls I've had at the one by Braintree Tattoo Studio with drivers not paying attention to pedestrians and driving off early or just not stopping in general. I know I am not the only one who takes issue with this as I have heard people discussing their concerns at the crossing. I am in contact with Local Councillor Robert Mitchell who is putting my proposal forward to the Braintree Local Highways Panel, but as the old saying goes there is strength in numbers and we need you to help us with our mission.

Prevent motor insurers from penalising drivers for non-fault accidents
Most young drivers will agree that the amount they are charged for their motor insurance is sometimes unfair, but what is even more unfair is being penalised for accidents that were not their fault. Being a young driver at 18, insurance is pricey as it is, but having been involved in two accidents (both non-fault) in just over a year of driving, it makes it even worse for me. Putting in some information on comparison sites like confused.com, generating 2 quotes that are identical apart from the sole fact that the second has these two accidents declared, the first quote comes cheapest at £1800, and the second at £4000. Insurers have told me that being involved in non-fault accidents make me a higher risk to insure, which in my opinion is unthinkably stupid and makes no sense whatsoever. I don’t understand why insurers can walk all over drivers that are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time at no fault of their own, the effects can even be worse for the driver not at fault compared to the one at fault that has to make a claim. I believe that something needs to be done to put this in order - motor insurance is a legal requirement for all drivers, so why should we be faced with no options other than to pay up ridiculous amounts or have to give up driving altogether even if it may be crucial for our education/work?

Save the cars and stop the waste!
The policy of Irish insurance companies of not quoting, or not providing a competitive quote, on cars over ten years old is having a devastating impact, on the independent automotive aftermarket in Ireland. We have launched a campaign aimed at ending this unfair, unjust and nonsensical practice. Thousands of sound, clean, low emission vehicles are being scrapped, making a mockery of the NCT system because they can no longer be economically insured. Because of this, many car owners have found their vehicle’s value has been slashed. Large swaths of Irish drivers are effectively being excluded from the roads and many people’s rural mobility and independence are under threat. The practice is now causing garage closures and job losses in other supporting businesses and often means a vital amenity is taken away from a local community. Let’s get common sense restored, save these cars, save jobs and save motorists money!

Bring DOWN the cost of INSURANCE!!
The cost of Insurance (Motor, Home, Pet & Health) has increased so much over the last few years, it has become unaffordable to many people. Between the greed of shareholders and the tax increases under this government, many people can no longer afford insurance. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40107955 http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/comment/direct-lines-soaring-profits-and-dividend-and-the-real-reason-youre-paying-all-time-high-motor-a7870851.html Many people are finding it impossible to put a car on the road, this is isolating people. And under a government that demands we all need to try and improve our situations, how can we.... when working in another area to improve our income requires a vehicle (we don`t all live on 24hr bus routes, or work Mon to Fri 9-5), yet we can`t afford to put a vehicle on the road because for the less wealthy, the insurance can often be more expensive than the car. Home, Health & Pet insurance are a luxury to many so bringing the cost of the insurance and the tax on the insurance down would mean more people can afford it, that in itself will bring in more revenue and should help bring prices down further. This situation has to be addressed.
