Rename Buddha Bowl Popcorn and Reject Cultural Appropriation

More than 500 million people in the world practice Buddhism, and even more are curious about and learning about the ancient tradition that originated in Asia more than 2000 years ago. Practicing Buddhists respect and revere The Three Jewels--the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha--because these three gems are the foundation of Buddhist practice. So when companies like LesserEvil use important Buddhist symbols in naming products, marketing their products, and selling their products to the masses for the sake of publicity, they offend the multitudes of people who see these symbols as expressions of their faith, dedication, and practice.  LesserEvil Healthy Brands Co. currently produces the Buddha Bowl, an organic popcorn product that comes in a variety of flavors. In addition to using the name that refers to an enlightened being, the product packaging also features a monk in a robe holding a bowl of popcorn. It is deeply disrespectful and discriminatory to use religious and spiritual symbols in creating and producing goods for for-profit companies that are wholly disconnected from the tradition. I care because I am a practicing Buddhist who connects deeply with the significance behind the title Buddha, the role and image of a monk or nun, and the importance of the Buddha's teachings to achieve peace in oneself and in the world. I am offended to see the Buddha's image used to sell snacks, just as I would be equally offended to see the image of Jesus Christ, God, or the Prophet Muhammad on the packaging of food or candy. But LesserEvil can make things right by changing the name of their product to something that does not appropriate and exploit the important images and symbols from this ancient tradition. There are numerous decision-makers at LesserEvil who can make this possible, including: The President and CEO - Charles CoristineVice President of Product Development - Lisa HarrisBrand and Marketing Consultant - Brooke MolinaroliMarketing Manager - Jesse Dinius Let us make LesserEvil aware that using the name Buddha and the image of a monk on its product is inappropriate, disrespectful, and inflammatory. They can right this wrong by changing the name of its product, and issuing an apology in acknowledgement.

Justice for Buddhist Monk Ven. Vatthana (Cui) Tran

Justice for Buddhist Monk Ven. Vatthana Cui Tran We, the members of the congregation of The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Buddhist Association Inc. (aka Wat Sunset, in San Jose) and the general Buddhist community and public community, HEREBY; opposes the “eviction and harassment" actions that is being made by the present Khmer Kampuchea Krom Buddhist Association Inc., Committee and Board of Directors, against his honorable monk, Ven. Vatthana Tran (Cui Tran) who is a highly-respected monk, serving the Buddhist temple and community for over a decade, and currently residing at the pagoda at: 66 Sunset Ct. San Jose, California 95116. Ven. Tran has been wrongfully accused, harassed, humiliated and publicly shamed by the KKBA committees, claiming the following accusations: 1. Stealing temple money for his own personal use. Facts: Money that is/was donated to the temple/monk, shall be used however the monk and board at the time, deems appropriate for any religious and community purposes. 2. Gambling Facts: Playing chess without money, is NOT considered gambling or wrong. Chess is a game of strategy. 3. Having a child in 2007 in Vietnam, while being a monk. Facts: The child was allegedly born on August 12, 2007 and conceived in 2006. Ven. Tran left his homeland in 2004 and didn’t return until 2009.   Please follow our support page on Facebook "Support Page: Justice for Buddhist Monk Ven. Vatthana Cui Tran", that shows the false accusations and allegations, have NO truths to it. And how KKBA committees are trying to take away the temple from the monks and community for their own personal/private use of the property, and discriminating against any other race that is not Khmer Krom, even other Khmer people. Ven. Tran has helped build this temple and community, to assisting and congregating with the community, and many other temples locally and around the world. He has been apart of our community and family, helping us through the many different chapters in our lives, through the good and bad times. He has been there for our traditional new year and yearly events, religious ceremonies honoring our elders and ancestors, housewarmings, weddings, funerals, etc. keeping us together… just to name a few, but more importantly he has been there for us (like family) when we needed him most, for spiritual blessings, cleansing, guidance, and when our loved one's were ill or passing and we needed a monk present to bless them, he was there, when called for at all hours of the day or night, near or far. He has also helped donated funds to many religious and humanitarian causes/charities within the community and around the world, such as building more temples, schools, helping the poor and less fortunate. He provided a full funeral service for a fellow devoted worshipers who passed away without any family members, being able to provide her with any proper funeral or service. He did this with the temples funds and his own personal savings. And this is just some of the reasons why we are here to support him, but more importantly because he is a righteous monk! • We the people, DO NOT support this action! And REQUEST for these proceedings and harassment be stopped immediately. • We believe that these actions would create a permanently negative impact on our community, religion and Buddhism practice, by dividing the solidarity (unity) of the congregation and community. • We the people, stand together as one, to protect a monk’s rights, preserve our religion and culture, that we worked so hard to rebuild, and for the future of our children and grandchildren. • We sign this petition, to support his honorable monk Ven. Vatthana Tran, to stay at the (temple), in peace, so that he can continue to provide and perform his duties as a monk, by conducting Buddhist teachings, ceremonies, blessings, etc. for the temple and the community. Thanks to everyone who signed this petition and for your support. Please continue to help share with your family and friends. Every vote counts and matters, because we as a community matter. *Together we shall rise again, like the rising lotus*
