Petition to Halifax Regional Municipality

Petition to Change 'Cornwallis Street' in Halifax to 'Rocky Jones Street'

Cornwallis Street in North-End Halifax brings thoughts of oppression and racialized violence to people of the original inhabitants of the area. Cornwallis Street is home to various African-Canadian focused organizations, and the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre. The purpose of this petition is to change the name of the street, to reflect a champion for both Mi'kmaw and African-Nova Scotians. Jones was a founding member of The Black United Front of Nova Scotia, National Black Coalition of Canada, Dalhousie University Transition Year Program (where he taught for 10 years), Dalhousie Law School Indigenous Blacks and Mi'kmaq Program, African Canadian Liberation Movement, African Canadian Caucus of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Project to name a few. Jones was involved in the establishment of the Black Inmates Association and the Native Brotherhood of Dorchester Penitentiary and Springhill Institution. Jones developed programs for women in the Kingston Prison for Women, Halifax County Correctional Centre and in the community. The Transition Year Program, for example, has helped educate thousands (Over 1000 as of January, 2012) of Mi'kmaw and African-Canadians from Dalhousie University. We recognize that history can not be changed, although we can choose who we honour by naming streets, parks, and schools after them. Having streets named after more positive figures will also help boost confidence and tranquility among area residents, while inspiring youth to reach their full potential. By signing this petition you agree that Halifax Regional Municipality should honour true heroes such as Mr. Jones, as opposed to people like Mr. Cornwallis. IMPORTANT UPDATE (June 2020): The petition was handed over to Halifax North councillor Lindell Smith in August of 2018. At that time, the petition had 1,700 signatures, 300 comments, along with 60 in-person signatures from people who live, work or own a business on the street. Mr. Smith presented the petition to Council on September 18, 2018. However, there has still been no action on changing the name. We need you to take it one step further and contact elected officials to bring the petition up as a motion to Council, so it can be voted on. Tell them why it is important to you that the name be changed, once and for all. Please take a moment to write an email, make a phone call or write a letter to elected officials: Mayor Mike SavageCall: 902.490.4010Email: mayor@halifax.caMailing Address: PO Box 1749, Halifax, NS B3J 3A5 Halifax Peninsula North - Councillor Lindell SmithCall: 902-579-6975Email: lindell.smith@halifax.ca Halifax South Downtown - Councillor Waye MasonCall: 902-490-8462Email: waye.mason@halifax.ca

Demand racial data on police involved deaths in Canada

Statistics Canada only reports police involved deaths when the officer responsible has been charged. Unfortunately, it is rare that victims of police brutality get the justice they deserve. Many officers never do get charged. This results in a gross lack of information, data, and transparency on police violence in Canada. This especially affects Canadian people of colour, who are disproportionally murdered by police, but as a result of the lack of proper data, do not get awareness. Awareness is essential for change and for justice.  As Canadians, we frequently hear about the United States, and their failures to hold the police responsible for their actions. We hear about the countless lives lost at the hands of police, and we see the anger that this provokes. We tend to forget that this is not solely an American issue. The difference? American police officers have body cams to prove when an officer had overstepped. Canada does not require police officers to have body cams, because there is not enough evidence to support the need. There is not enough evidence, because Canada does not document it. In Canada, we don’t even know how bad things are, and this needs to change. Starting with the documentation of police involved deaths by race. This will give us transparency and much needed data that can support further change.

Recognize August 1 as Emancipation Day across Canada

GREAT NEWS! Motion 36 to recognize Emancipation Day, has passed! Watch the vote here. Read our latest update post for more! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black History in Canada has been muted. Black people have been in Canada for over 400 years and there is a wealth of history that contributes to heritage of this country. Give Black Canadian Heritage a voice, starting with the national observation of Emancipation Day on August 1, celebrating the Act for the Abolition of Slavery, which took effect in 1834 in many Commonwealth countries including Canada, South Africa and within the Caribbean. Currently, the first Monday in August is an observed holiday in Ontario and is referred to  as a "Civic Holiday". This holiday has been dedicated to John Graves Simcoe, who passed the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada in 1793 but all slaves were not free until 41 years later with the Act for Abolition of Slavery in 1834.  As of 2019, Toronto recognizes August as Emancipation Month. Honour Black Canadian Heritage and celebrate August 1 as a milestone in Canadian history that is recognized and observed across the country, coast to coast, sea to sea, "ad mari usque ad mare". Stop Censoring Steven Argue, Leftists, Pro-Palestinians, Anti-Racists, Opponents of Police Terror and Others on Facebook

Not long ago a political colleague was effectively censored on facebook book. Here is what happened: "I can't log into my FB profile from my computer anymore on false pretenses of my computer having malware. It does not. They demand I download their malware. defense system in order to remove this nonexistent malware. I already have a good malware defense in place. All attempts to jump through that hoop fail because FB's site will not even download. As I see this, it smells fishy. I think, through this means, FB, after repeatedly censoring me, has found a way to largely remove me from FB." Steven Argue has been previously censored for posting stuff against Israel's genocide against Palestinians. Other Pro-Palestinians have been censored too. Not only that but people who have posted stuff protesting police terror against blacks are also routinely censored. The fact is quite a few leftists have been censored on facebook when there is no legitimate basis on their "community standards" to censor such people. Steven Argue is an example but their are plenty of other people who have been censored. If they can censor him they can censor any of us. An injury to on is an injury to all. Ironically supports of Neo-Nazi groups like Right Sector don't get banned even when reported to facebook. In the same vein facebook has allowed people to post the confederate flag (a flag of racism, slavery and Klan terror). They have also allowed advocates of eugenics, supporters of ablest terrorist and fascist front-man Robert Latimer, apologists for European colonialism, support for killing off "the sick, disabled, elderly and infirm" etc. This despite that fact that facebook is supposed to have "community standards" against such groups and posts. It is quite clear that a lot of the censorship has nothing to do with the stated "Community Standards" and everything to do with what Zuckerberg and Co. support or oppose politically. It is obvious that Zuckerberg and Co. have no moral authority to censor anyone. This petition demands: * Stop censoring Steven Argue, myself (Michael Gregory) and Carlos A. Rivera-Jones. * Stop censoring other leftists on facebook as well as left-wing political groups and pages and political events. * Stop censoring Pro-Palestinian activists on facebook as well as Pro-Palestinian political groups and pages and political events. * Stop censoring anti-racists activist and activists against police terror on facebook as well as anti-racist political groups and pages and political events on facebook as well as political groups and political events opposing police terror on facebook. * Stop censoring supporters of the anti-ISIS, Kurdish militants PKK and YPG. * Abolish the rule against "fake names" (or at the very least, only ban people who assume the identity of real life AND living individuals, not historical figures, fictional characters or made up names). * Stop censoring people, groups, pages and events for political views that are clearly not in violation of facebooks "community standards". * Stop monitoring facebook user's every move. https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2014/08/18/18760208.php
