Help tenants in Newfoundland and Labrador leave abusive and dangerous situations
Domestic and sexual abuse is something that affects many people in a very negative way. These issues most often affect women and children. People in relationships where this type of behaviour occurs often feel trapped, like there is nowhere to go, or no way out. It must be an awful feeling. In Newfoundland and Labrador sometimes for people in this situation there really is no way out. At least, no way out of your rental agreement. The provincial Residential Tenancies Act lists several situations in which a tenant can terminate a rental agreement (lease) early, but unfortunately being the victim of abuse, or your children being the victims of abuse, is not one of them. So you can terminate a rental agreement because your upstairs neighbour has a noisy dog, but not if you are being beaten by a spouse, or your children are being sexually abused. That just doesn't seem right. As it stands now, there are a number of barriers faced by a tenant attempting to flee a violent situation if they have signed a fixed-term rental agreement, like a year-long lease, which is common: If the tenant has signed a rental agreement with their abuser the fleeing tenant could still be liable for any unpaid rent, or damages, even after they leave. This could negatively affect the credit of the person attempting to flee, making it harder for them to find accommodations. If the tenant and their abuser do not live together, but the abuser knows where the tenant lives, it could leave them in a dangerous situation. If a landlord refuses to let a tenant that's been the victim of abuse terminate their rental agreement early, there is little the tenant can do but wait until their rental agreement expires. We have actually seen some cases where a tenant has asked to be let out of a rental agreement due to abuse, and were refused by the landlord. Even for landlords that want to help, it can be a tricky situation. Since a rental agreement is a legal document normally it cannot be changed without the permission of everyone that has signed it. An abusive individual is not likely to agree to this change, and in fact just having the abuser find out that such a request was made could put the victim of abuse in a more dangerous situation. As one person explained: "I was in a abusive relationship, living together, under a year lease. A couple of months in I had to leave and seek shelter. The landlord was threatening me to pay the rent, because my ex refused to, and also refused to take his name off the lease. Fortunately he let me break the lease agreement." When you are trying to flee a situation in which you are being abused, or your children are being abused, these are not the kinds of problems you should encounter. Ontario, and other provinces, have enacted legislation that allows people to flee a situation in which the tenant, or their children, are being abused or are in danger, and allows them to terminate a rental agreement early as a result. Newfoundland and Labrador needs to do the same. And the sooner we act, the sooner the victims of abuse are able to get out of their situations without any additional worry about a rental agreement, unpaid rent, damages, etc. Currently the provincial Residential Tenancies Act is under review, with changes hopefully coming not too far down the road. We need to let the government know that we consider this a serious issue, and that we expect changes to the law to help address these problems. There are a number of ways this could work, including requiring the tenant to provide documentation from a doctor, homeless shelter, transition house, or a court order. Let's all stand together against violence, and show that we support changes to the law to help protect the victims of domestic and sexual abuse. I'd like to ask that you sign this petition, and also share it with family, friends, and anyone that follows you on social media. We all need to work together to help end abuse, and your signature and a simple click of the "share" button could make a world of difference!

Formal Inquiry into Justice Gregory Lenehan
Justice Gregory Lenehan recently acquitted a Halifax taxi driver, Bassam Al-Rawi (Bassam Abdullatif) of sexual assault. Bassam was caught by police assaulting a passenger who was passed out drunk in his taxi. The passenger's DNA was found on Bassam's mouth. This was not enough evidence to charge Bassam in Gregory Lenehan's opinion. Other decisions from Lenehan include: Father who violated teenage daughter will serve term of two years less a day in the community Discrimination in his courtroom against breast feeding mother The sentencing of the teen in the Rehtaeh Parsons case Gregory Lenehan's ideas of consent are antiquated and dangerous. He should not be in a position to hand down decisions allowing sexual predators to go free. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This petition will also be sent to the Halifax City Councillors still in office who decided to reinstate this sexual offender's Taxi License.

Show Russian lawmakers that Canadians oppose the decriminalization of domestic violence
The lives and safety of Russian women and children are in serious jeopardy. Russian lawmakers are moving to decriminalize domestic violence. If this bill is passed into law, domestic violence that does not result in serious injuries (e.g. broken bones, hospitalization) would be decriminalized, and the maximum penalty would become a fine and up to 15 days administrative arrest, or compulsory community service, rather than jail time. This law applies to domestic violence between partners, as well as toward children. Domestic violence is already a concerning issue in Russia. According to an article written by Human Rights Watch, 70% of Russian women say that they have experienced at least one form of violence by their husbands, and according to the BBC, 14,000 Russian women die every year from injuries inflicted by their husbands or partners. Additionally, help and resources are greatly lacking for individuals experiencing domestic violence in Russia, including limited shelter spaces, lack of investigation or response to reports of domestic violence by officials, and a general belief that domestic violence is an issue that is a "private family matter." Russia is party to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and by accepting these Conventions, Russia committed to undertake measures to end discrimination against women and children in all forms. By decriminalizing domestic violence, Russia is failing in its commitments to these Conventions and its citizens. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has the power to put pressure on the Russian government to stop the decriminalization of domestic violence. Please sign this petition to show your support for Russian women and children, and ask our Prime Minister to take action. Please help send the message to the Russian government that Canadians will not turn a blind eye to this bill that will further put women and children at risk. In addition to signing this petition, you can email Prime Minister Trudeau directly. A form letter is included for you to copy and paste, or you can write your own. To: firstname.lastname@example.org Subject: Please help stop the decriminalization of domestic violence in Russia Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, Re: Russia Decriminalizing Domestic Violence I am writing to you behalf of the women and children of Russia, whose lives and safety are in jeopardy if Russian lawmakers succeed in decriminalizing domestic violence. If this bill is passed into law, domestic violence that does not result in serious injuries (e.g. broken bones, hospitalization) would be decriminalized, and the maximum penalty would become a fine and up to 15 days administrative arrest, or compulsory community service, rather than jail time. By accepting these Conventions, Russia committed to undertake measures to end discrimination against women and children in all forms. By decriminalizing domestic violence, Russia is failing in its commitments to these Conventions and its citizens. Prime Minister, I feel very strongly that you can use your position of power and the backing of your country to put pressure on the Russian lawmakers to reconsider this bill that will decriminalize domestic violence. Please contact President Putin, the Government of the Russian Federation (RF), the State Duma of the RF, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the RF and let them know that Canadians stand in support of Russian women and children, and oppose the decriminalization of domestic violence. Please put pressure on these organizations to adopt a much needed federal program to protect violence against women and children, rather than further weakening the existing laws. I wish to thank you in advance for your consideration of this issue, and for being an inspiring and progressive leader for our country during a very difficult time in other countries around the world. Sincerely, [Your Name][Your City, Province]

Open Letter to the Media about the Death of Dr. Elana Fric and Violence Against Women
In the past week the Canadian medical community has been mourning the cruel murder of a respected colleague, Dr. Elana Fric, taken from her three young children and the rest of her family allegedly by her husband. She was a family physician in Scarborough and assistant professor at the University of Toronto, a colleague, mentor, tutor, health care advocate and friend to those of us fortunate enough to have known and worked with her. In reading the news coverage of her untimely and tragic death we are shocked and offended at how it is being written about, although unfortunately this is nothing new in terms of how violence against women is often portrayed. In one article her work and achievements are absent while her husband is presented as a "Yale-educated medical star" and his TV work and place of employment are all noted. In many others we are confronted with headlines like “Toronto neurosurgeon charged with the death of his wife,” reducing this accomplished woman to simply a victim in a story where her husband is the protagonist. Why not instead: “Respected family doctor and health care advocate found dead, husband charged with her murder”? Humanizing the (usually) male predators and murderers of women while the achievements and life stories of their victims are ignored only contributes to the epidemic of violence against women. It is in fact another act of misogynistic violence to reduce women in this way. We should not be reading interviews with this accused murderer's co-workers and patients that paint an image of a dedicated, hard-working, talented surgeon. Lamenting the loss of his surgical skills and the gap he leaves behind glamorizes him and feeds into the idea that the only men who abuse are unsuccessful degenerates. His work should be a footnote in these stories, if it is even mentioned at all. Where are the stories about Dr. Fric's patients? About the gap left behind by losing HER? On a broader scale, the simple fact is that prominent men can be abusers too. A culture wherein we display surprise and disbelief when we learn that someone successful and accomplished has also been violent and degrading towards women simply perpetuates the problem of gender-based violence. It makes it difficult for women to speak out about abuse at the hands of a prominent man if the default cultural view is that these types of men never abuse. And when we prioritize men's stories over women's in how we report on these events, reducing women to bodies, to mere objects, we further jeopardize the women who remain in dangerous situations with an intimate male partner. We demand the media acknowledge that there is a journalistic responsibility to society at large in how these cases are reported on. Media outlets need to own up to their role in perpetuating a culture of violence against women and stop humanizing and glamourizing male abusers simply to sensationalize a tragic story. Switch the focus to all the achievements and successes in the life of Dr. Fric, who will be greatly missed by all, and think carefully in the future about how other such stories will be presented to the public. Your Support to Stop Cow Slaughter, Help Build Civilized Society and Greener Environment
Vedic times consider cow as one of the seven mothers of the humanity. She provides nutritious milk, which is very important food for human beings right from young days. Milk and milk products are most important food ingredients for humanity, hence it is very important to protect them. With the bulls we plow the land, they are like the father who produces food. The manure from them, is very important for agriculture, hence any civilized human being should be protecting these animals. In the material world the human society gives all protection to the human being, but there is no law to protect the descendants of Surabhi. But Maharaja Pariksit and the Pandavas were fully conscious of the importance of the cow and bull, and they were prepared to punish the cow-killer with all chastisement. The human society should recognize the importance of the cow and the bull and thus give all protection to these important animals, following in the footsteps of Maharaja Pariksit. Without cow protection in human society, no human civilization can prosper at any length. Protection of Cows is the single-most important principle towards saving the whole world from both moral and spiritual degradation. Simply by protection of Cows all the wonderful benefits of religiosity and piety will be automatically achieved without any separate endeavor. Therefore, please sign this petition to support the cause to get our law makers to enact stringent laws against cow slaughter. This is the most important thing we can do towards building a more civilized society and certainly this will also help building more greener environment.

Stricter laws for animal cruelty
Everywhere you look, you see animal abuse. You see innocent animals in zoos and circuses imprisoned and tortured for fun and entertainment. You see birds caged everywhere and stripped of their right to freedom. You see animals being experimented on in labs - Their bellies and heads cut open, they being drowned in water, etc. You see animals being slaughtered, tortured, and horrible things being done to them, and Most of the perpetrators get away with a small punishment or with no punishment at all. We don't realize that all the animal cruelty that has been legalized today under the title of "Humane Slaughter", is still animal cruelty. Animals still feel pain. There still exist today, many youtube channels that abuse animals openly and have not had anything done to them. Why is that? When we see an act of terrorism or human rights violation, Strict action is taken to find the criminals and punish them appropriately. Why isn't the same done for animals? I say we all sign this petition and ask the governments of this world to make the laws even stricter for animal cruelty and for them to defund all the lab experiments done on animals. Some references for animal cruelty. https://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/animal-testing-101/ https://www.peta.org/features/circus-video-undercover-abuse/ https://headlines.peta.org/wool-videos-prove-sheep-suffer/ And these are just the top layer. there are many more terrible things being done to them. What do you think? Should stricter laws be implemented for the protection of animals or not?

Petition to Government of India
Justice for animals and stricter laws against animal abusers
To all the animal lovers in India, All living things have a right to live on this Earth but, we, very often become, totally, insensitive to their pain, only because animals can’t speak the language of humans, they don’t have a voice. Every day in India, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Left in unsanitary conditions with no food or water, they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion they deserve. Some are found and rescued, given the chance to experience how great life and humans can be; others aren't so lucky. To grow as a nation, we must fight for these abused animals' rights and severely punish heartless owners. It is up to us to speak for these creatures who lack a voice, for who will if we don't? People justify their abuse towards animals as protection against harm, but the truth is that the animals are trying to protect themselves. I have personally seen people hurting dogs for the fun of it and it breaks my heart to see that. Here are some instances of animal abuse https://www.scoopwhoop.com/animal-cruelty-in-india/ https://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2020/jun/19/humans-losing-humanity-rising-instances-of-animal-cruelty-in-india-land-where-they-are-worshipped-2158506.html What can we do By signing and sharing this petition, we can make viewers aware about what is going on with respect to animals and we can make the government aware and increase the severity of punishment against animal abusers.
