Greyhound Racing should be Illegal

Greyhound Racing – a booming sport in the UK, playing a major role in the gambling industry and bringing in thousands of pounds each year. So the question you’re probably wondering is; what makes this sport such a controversial and upsetting act? A racing greyhound’s life will begin in a yard; they will stay for 8 weeks with their mothers, building muscle and playing with other puppies. They are moved to a racing facility at 12 months old and enter their first preliminary race at 15 to 18 months old. If the greyhounds are deemed unfit,or they do not fit the strict requirements set upon them from birth – for example if they are not fast or fit enough, they are then viewed as a waste of money, a waste of kennel space which could be used for a dog who will earn the owner money. The dogs are discarded. Heartless humans are exploiting these peaceful creatures for a profit. Every single day for a racing greyhound is systematic. Up to 20 hours a day in cages with little to no human interaction. They are starved before they race so they are famished. Their cages are often left covered in excrement and dirt; not cleaned out for days. The dogs do not have a voice to consent to this life- and they do not have a voice to fight back. Many racing greyhounds are lucky to live to the ages of 4, when their average lifespans are meant to be 10-15 years. They are kept in captivity all their lives, never experiencing real life; they will never go for a walk in the park, never wake up on their owner’s bed or wait for them after work. Greyhounds are very loyal dogs, and they trust humans to care for them - they are affectionate, intelligent creatures, yet we allow them to be abused in this way for their whole lives. In addition to this, we allow their lives to end abruptly and alone. Many die on the track. Many are euthanized. Many are sent to labs. Many are killed by the bolt gun - a lethal weapon often used unprofessionally to leave these innocent creatures on the floor in pain for hours, to die on their own. Surely anyone can see why this cruel sport should be banned, the dogs are killed in masses - it is estimated that over 1, 350, 000 greyhounds have been killed in the sport’s 90-year history.

Animal Abuse and Human Abuse: The Partners In Crime

Abuse against animals is increasing dramatically and includes domestic, wild and captive (such as circuses and zoos). Very rarely are offenders, when found guilty, barred from keeping or being involved with animals. I ask that it becomes law that an Animal Abuse Register is brought into place and that all offenders are placed on this register. I also ask that offenders are barred from keeping or working with animals for a minimum period of 10 years if not lifelong. Many studies reveal that children who torture or kill animals are likely to show violence towards people when they grow up. Re-classifying animal abuse will aid law enforcement and the FBI in quantifying and reporting incidents of animal abuse. Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County SPCA said "People are taking animal cruelty more and more seriously. It’s a violent crime, and if it goes unchecked, it leads to bigger things." The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that animal abuse will now be prosecuted as a “crime against society”. And importantly, animal cruelty would be reported as a distinct category, meaning animal abusers fall into the same group as arsonists and murderers.  Acts of cruelty to animals are not mere indications of a minor personality flaw in the abuser; they are symptomatic of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals don’t stop there—many of them move on to their fellow humans. “Murderers … very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids,” says Robert K. Ressler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).(1) Studies have shown that violent and aggressive criminals are more likely to have abused animals as children than criminals who are considered non-aggressive.(2) A survey of psychiatric patients who had repeatedly tortured dogs and cats found that all of them had high levels of aggression toward people as well.(3) According to a New South Wales newspaper, a police study in Australia revealed that “100 percent of sexual homicide offenders examined had a history of animal cruelty.”(4) To researchers, a fascination with cruelty to animals is a red flag in the backgrounds of serial killers and rapists Tracking Animal Cruelty: FBI Collecting Data on Crimes Against Animals Animal Abuse And Human Abuse: Partners In Crime This petition is asking that those found guilty of ANY abuse against animals are barred from ever keeping animals again and are placed on an Animal Abusers Register.
