Reject the Amazon Warehouse Proposal in Schodack

Visit:  saveschodack.com for additional information!   A million sq ft. warehouse revealed on June 18, 2018 after months of speculation is Amazon.  This proposed warehouse is off Rte 9  and it is not a good fit for Schodack NY or rural Rensselaer County. The 24/7 facility will have 300+ Tractor trailers loading daily, filling the air with diesel air pollution. Nearby rural homes will be adversely affected by noise, pollution, and run-off issues. More than simply the immediate area around the warehouse which will be affected, but also several miles along Rts. 9/20 and Rt. 9 will face traffic hazards from tractor trailers (30 per hour)+ increase in vehicles (600) making it hazardous for residents to turn off onto rural, residential roads. In addition, the facility, with acres of black-top, is located directly above the Town's aquifer, and in close proximity to the environmentally-sensitive Moordener Kill (Creek). This proposal will not provide any tax breaks for residents and water and sewer hookups will be costly for residents if offered.   The cost of appropriate fire apparatus to service a warehouse the size of Yankee stadium is an additional cost to taxpayers. Not to mention the strain on emergency and police services.  Vacant warehouses dot the urban landscape in Albany, Rensselaer, and other, already industrially-zoned areas of the Capital District. We urge you to reject this proposal thus preserving the open lands in Schodack and other rural parts of Rensselaer County for agricultural, natural, and other environmentally-sensitive business uses. We the undersigned concerned residents of Schodack are asking the Town of Schodack government to adhere to the strategic vision articulated in the adopted Comprehensive Plan with regard to the approval of commercial development in our Town.

Remove All Donald Trump Products from Amazon.com

As a DREAMer and Latino American who recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree from American University, I am disgusted by the words of Donald Trump regarding immigrants, and particularly those from Mexico, which he called "rapists" and accused of generally being criminals. It's not lost on me that for him "Mexican" probably means any Latino, particularly undocumented immigrants. There was a time when Trump represented the American dream, when he published his book The Art of the Deal. I may not be considered an American by law, but Donald Trump and his words are not how I define American. We have come to this country to seek a better life, for some of us, like myself, it was our parents who brought us here to the "land of opportunity." Trump has been able to have his own success in this country, much of it which probably would have been impossible without the Latino community and many of these Mexican immigrants he seems to despise so much. They work in his hotels, they build and renovate his hotels, work on his golf courses, etc. and he reaps the benefits of their hard work, and then publicly, says these horrible things while seeking the presidency of this country. And while he may not be an immigrant, I don't think Mr. Trump has forgotten that the richest man in the world is a Mexican. For a man who prides himself on making good business deals, who wrote the book The Art of the Deal, he sure doesn't know how to deal with an America that has evolved to no longer accept vitriol like that spoken at his campaign announcement. Amazon has recently responded to the racist terror attack in Charleston that sparked a conversation about our nation's history with race and particularly with the Confederate flag by ceasing to sell Confederate flags on their site. Now I call on them to do the same with Donald Trump and cease to sell his many products on the site listed by Donald Trump and his companies. Trump no longer represents a sound business judgement, he represents societal regression and is a symbol for losing business by being held responsible for spreading hate. NBCUniversal and Univision have both recognized this by ending their TV deals with Trump and not showing Miss Universe or The Apprentice. I call on Amazon and its CEO, Jeff Bezos, whose own father immigrated to America as a young man, to also cease business with this man, and stop supporting his hate.

Amazon Prime Discount for Teachers

Amazon offers a Prime membership discount of half price fo students. While that is fabulous, I also think they should offer this incredible deal to teachers.  Students must verify eligibility with their school email so it would not be hard for teachers to do the same.  Teachers use Amazon in many different ways. It’s great to create wish lists to get out to parents, to order supplies and other things you need quickly without having to go out, and even on those days you watch a movie for whatever special reason, Prime Video is awesome.  Amazon is a great company and since they offer students (who are usually on a budget) a great discount, why not offer it to teachers who are also usually on a budget as well. Especially since the membership price comes out of our pockets and not the schools.  Of course not every item a teacher buys off of Amazon is for their class. Some teachers with Amazon Prime may not order anything for their students or classroom. I still think it would be great for Amazon to offer, as appreciation, a teacher discount equivalent to the discount they offer students.  I think all businesses should offer a teacher discount, but I am starting with a company that could set a great example for others to follow.  While this isn’t a pressing life or death matter, it’s important all the same.  Please help me get Amazon’s Jeff Bezos attention. Back me up in trying to get Amazon to offer a teacher Prime Membership discount.
