Petition to Coastal Zone Management Unit - Barbados
Expand the Marine Protected Area in Carlisle Bay - Help save our sea turtles!
Barbados' Sea turtles need protecting. Last week, a young green turtle was found underwater strangled by fishing line and caught up in soft coral at the bottom of Carlisle Bay. He had a hook down his throat and a line wrapped around his neck. He had another hook caught in his arm that had wrapped itself around the coral, making it so he was unable to surface for the air he needed to survive. This young green turtle was one of the many turtles that fall victim to the carelessness of humans. While the death in itself is pretty horrific, the part that should upset you the most is that we find boats and fishermen with their hooks and lines in the same area all the time. Putting fishing lines in front of hungry turtles (in an area they have become accustomed to human interaction and feedings) is not only harmful to an already endangered species but to our tourism industry as well. While Green and Hawksbill turtle sightings are very common in Barbados, they are not animals that flourish all over the world. Both species are on the [critically] endangered animals list and need our help. We are their number one predator, causing harm and depleting of their natural food source. We need to step up to initiate change. That is why we are starting this petition. It is a call to: 1) Expand the south coast Marine Protected Area (MPA) to include all of Carlisle Bay. 2) To increase our MPAs to include just 10-20% of our coast line. This would represent approx.10km of our 92Km of coastline. Turtles are protected by law in Barbados, yet fishermen are still out in areas commonly filled with sea turtles and snorkelers (including young children). Without any fishing legislation put in place, the Coast Guard can not intervene until a turtle is brought onto a boat. When a fisherman/women catches a sea turtle, they simply cut the line, leaving the hook lodged in the turtles mouths causing great harm and likely death in most cases. Having a healthy population of sea turtles is something Barbados prides itself on. It is something many organizations (the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, The University of West Indies, Bellairs Research Centre and The Barbados Dive Operators Association) dedicate a lot of time and resources towards maintaining. Not only do we benefit ecologically, but we benefit financially from them as well. Our island, our fish, our tourism industry and our fishermen all benefit from having a large number of sea turtles around. Here's why: They are good for our ocean, for our fisheries and our environment: "Green turtles graze on seagrasses and algae, which maintains the seagrass beds and makes them more productive (much like mowing the lawn to keep it healthy). Seagrass consumed by green turtles is quickly digested and becomes available as recycled nutrients to the many species of plants and animals that live in the sea grass ecosystem. Seagrass beds also function as nurseries for several species of invertebrates and fish, many of which are of considerable value to commercial fisheries and therefore important to human food security." - World Wildlife Fund They are very important for our tourism and water sports industries:A study conducted by the Bellairs Research Institute last year helped determine the value of Barbados' sea turtle population. Each healthy and reliable sea turtle generates an estimated $1.7 million USD!! That's revenue a LOT of business' depend on in Barbados. Every hook lost down a sea turtles throat can be considered a million dollar loss to the country. The argument against expanding Marine Protected Areas is the loss of livelihood for fishermen. Unfortunately, without expanding the Marine Protected Areas we will see the same results as the fish populations will become more and more depleted and our reefs die off at a quicker rate. Fishermen have already begun to feel the effects of over-fishing and need to understand that the solution is not bigger or longer nets, the solution is not adding more fish-pots or leaving them down longer and the solution is not adding more hooks to your lines. Fish need to be given the opportunity to grow in size, to reproduce and to take care of our reefs. Expanding Marine Protected Areas has been proven to help repopulate reefs, to offer larger fish for catch and improve the coastline with healthy reefs. Protecting a larger area will help all of Barbados, Fishermen especially. In summary, we are requesting that the Marine Protected Areas be increased to include the zones where the turtles visit most often, and where fish nurseries will be most beneficial to our island. Our coastline does a lot for us, it's about time we took some steps towards returning the favour.

Petition to University of Leicester
Compensate students for strike action
We, the undersigned students of the University of Leicester, demand £300 of compensation for every student who loses contact time due to the upcoming strike action from the 22nd February to the 16th March 2018. We judge this to be a fair share of the £9,250 annual tuition fee we already pay to this university that we will lose in the anticipated cancellations. While you’re here, this petition is also worth signing https://www.change.org/p/university-of-leicester-university-of-leicester-should-re-consider-the-appointment-of-david-willets-as-chancellor?recruiter=855740701&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_petition&utm_term=autopublish&utm_content=ex61%3Av4
Petition to The U.S. Senate
Please Stop the Prosecution of Kiera Wilmot!
This child clearly had no criminal intentions, and every indicator of being a bright and resourceful student. As a child who hasn't experimented with concoctions of household chemicals to see what would happen? The measure here should be harm caused, not strict liability. Felonizing a child that by all rights should be enjoying a scholarship is bad public policy, and an appalling abuse of the prosecutorial discretion. She needs someone to channel her native curiosity into productive, not use the to destroy her life. This is exactly what is the problem in the public educational system. Some one is wasting a lot of time and money, causing harm where none is due. You appear enjoy a position of trust capable of intervening and helping correct the abuse of discretion occurring below. We, the undersigned ask you do so, and pull this teen out of the meat grinder while there is still a chance to save her. We also respectfully remind the community that they can exercise a measure of discretion as jurors as well, and can and should exercise their prerogative to refuse to return a verdict of Guilty if the State refuses to retract these charges. This sort of thing fairly calls out for it. Please help, thank you.

Petition to Northumberland County, Mayor Gil Brocanier
Save the Ontario Early Years Center at the Cobourg YMCA
We, the undersigned, are residents of Northumberland County who protest the closing of our current OEYC location at the YMCA in Cobourg. As we have had the privilege of having access to the wonderful space and fabulous staff at the Cobourg YMCA Early Years Center we have concerns. These are our concerns for the new location: We worry about the cramped quarters: In the winter especially, we need to take our energetic children somewhere indoors that allows them to move a little and get rid of the feeling of cabin fever. The Port Hope location in Beatrice Strong does not allow this. It feels uncomfortably cramped with half a dozen children and their accompanying adults. We worry about the integration with the school: Will we be forced to share a hallway or a bathroom with the students there? What are the chances that our young impressionable children will hear some older students swearing in the hallways? What sort of security will there be? Will anyone be allowed to just come onto school property? Is this safe for the children attending the school? We worry about our children not wanting to attend the OEYCFC because of the location: Not all children like school, and we would like the OEYCFC to be a positive space for everyone. Will we loose our favorite programs like Yoga and Swimming? Or will we be forced to leave the OEYCFC location half way through circle time if we want to make it to a satellite location for the scheduled activity? Will we be forced to forgo any age specific activities if we have more than one child and no access to integrated child minding? This is what we love about our current center: The physical space at the YMCA: We think it's important for the children to have a large space to run around with lots of natural light. The amazing staff who have been super helpful. Some of our children have developed special relationships with these fantastic people. We want to fight for them to keep their jobs. We think it's nice to have somewhere to take school aged children that isn't straight back to school. They already spend so much time there, and it’s important for children to have some variety. The synergy with the YMCA childcare: It is fantastic for us to be able to participate in a program with one child while the other plays in the center. It allows us special time with one child while knowing the other is having a great time socializing and playing with people we trust. The perks of being in the YMCA building: This allows for classes like mom and baby yoga in house, and lets the kids use the special facilities like the pool, gym, and Pentel playground on occasion. This integration also allows our children to speak to people of all ages on a regular basis, helping them learn how to interact with all age groups from the very young to the very young of heart. We believe it is really important for children to be introduced to the YMCA at such an early age through the OEYC. It makes a natural and fun connection to physical exercise and healthy living. Our children see happy and healthy people coming in and out of the center, swimming in the pool, and playing in the gym. They see that exercise is fun! We all truly believe that it is in the best interest of our children and families if the center in the Cobourg YMCA remains open to us.
Petition to Rollins College Marketing Team
Keep the Rollins logo as is.
Dear Rollins Community,I would like to bring to your attention that recently the Rollins Marketing/Branding Team have decided that the Rollins' logo will be changed from its current "R" Anchor to just a yellow "R" logo. The School has decided that the new simplified logo will be more prestigious aligning Rollins with a better reputation among colleges and universities across the country. This however is a major misconception, schools such as Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell and many other "Prestigious" acclaimed schools all feature other items or representations in their logos relevant or irrelevant to their school's mascot. The Rollins Anchor is a symbol of us all being Rollins' Tars which we proudly sport. As Rollins Students and Student Athletes it is us whom are constantly representing Rollins with embroidered apparel, gifts, uniforms, and other marketing items. To say that the students have no say in this proposed logo change is not a fair representation of what is believe to be "best" for the college. After all it is the students and relatives of students who are Rollins' largest marketing tools. If we are able to generate enough signatures from the student body as well as Rollins' Alumni, the marketing team will be obligated to provide us with a say in the final decision. Please sign the petition in support of not changing the school's logo and share with as many current, past, or future Rollins students as you can!
