Draw Attention to Predatory Management at Y Bar & Bistro

Recently, more than 14 young women have come forward with stories about being served drinks that contained opioids and tranquilizers at Y Bar & Bistro in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This is one of the most popular bars for young college students at both Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College due to its close proximity to campus and Kalamazoo nightlife.  This problem surfaced on social media due to a TikTok video posted by one of the victims who said her and 14 friends went to the hospital after a night of drinking at Y Bar and Bistro. In the morning, they had no recollection of the night before and went to the hospital where they tested positive for opioids and tranquilizers. They were served drinks by the same man all night, who has also made sexual comments towards them and followed them on a spring break trip to Florida.  Multiple women have also stated that they were allowed into Y Bar & Bistro when they were underage and were not asked the show their IDs.  The victims have gone to the local police department but no action has been taken thus far. Y Bar & Bistro cannot remain open while women are actively coming forward with these allegations. Y Bar & Bistro needs to be thoroughly investigated as it is not safe for women to continue being served drinks that were drugged by the bartender(s).  Signing this petition will bring greater awareness to the predatory actions happening at this establishment.

Draw official attention to the timeline of some of the immigration cases in Canada

Immigration is the cornerstone of Canada as a developed country and advanced society. Many around the world put their faith in this road and take grave risks to secure a better future for themselves and their families. Immigration system of Canada is one of the most reliable and efficient of similar existing systems in other countries. However, as per recent trend, many applicants have faced irregular delays in their applications which is the subject of this petition. IRCC as the sole responsible agency for immigration in Canada has recently selected a large number of applications for permanent residency for more enhanced security checks known as Security Screening. As crucial and important as this procedure is for the safety of Canada and its good people, it has abnormally prolonged processing of above-said cases and put the applicants under tremendous pressure. Immigrants to Canada, especially those who apply under economic categories, are usually young, have outstanding life accomplishments, possess highest educational credentials, their professional experience is plentiful and most of them have a very good command of English. Therefore, they can easily merge into the Canadian society and start contributing to the society right after their arrival. We, as Iranian citizens who happen to have welcomed foreigners into our country, believe that it is crystal clear that immigration is a very complicated process and for people to successfully walk down this road, they need so much preparation and have to get a head start beforehand. The fact that the Iranian applicants who are going through Security Screening are in a seemingly indefinite limbo frustrates many of them and wouldn’t let them focus on the task at hand. Many of us have refused job offers in our home country or have put our careers on hold. Planning for the schooling of children and buying new houses are paused and some relationships are suffering from this delay. We already face huge uncertainties and not hearing good news about our immigration cases deepens our frustration and fear. At the end of the day, the government of Canada has every right to vet any foreign national who seeks entry to Canada in any way it deems fit. The only request that we have is that the responsible agencies for Security Screening shed some light on this very dark part of the process and reassure us that our cases are not untouched and are being processed in a timely fashion. If it is possible for CBSA to conclude Security Screening for a certain category of refugees in 96 hours (as per indicated in Link 1), why some applicants under FSW, CEC and PNP categories are given much lower priority and their process takes much more time? Even the Auditor General in its 2011 report had raised some concerns about the timeliness of CBSA's practice for permanent residency cases (Link 2). It is important to note that there are hundreds if not thousands of people who are eagerly looking forward to hearing back from IRCC about their cases and also to starting a new life in the great country of Canada. Petition to National Medical Commission India

Changes in NMC Draft for Foreign Medical Graduates

As a FOREIGN MEDICAL STUDENT we are not okay with the new draft proposed by National Medical Council Of India which states that Foreign Medical Students will not be allowed to change University,we can write NEXT exam only within 2 years of Graduation and have to pass an additional screening test along with Next Step 1 which will check our pre and para clinical knowledge.  We want NMC to amend changes to this draft as adding additional screening exam is not fair for us because we will be competing with Indian Medical Students in NEXT already. Also no such deadline or limited chances are proposed for Indian Medical Graduates so why this discrimination with Foreign Medical Graduates when already India is short of Doctors. If we have to appear for NEXT we want equal opportunities and additional screening exam should be removed. Also we should be allowed to change University accordingly as many factors can be responsible for such action taken by a student which includes not able to adapt to weather or better opportunity in some other university.

Concert for America: Stand up, Sing Out! - Jan 20

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a concert and telethon to raise funds for various progressive causes?  It would air starting early on January 20th and would be an opportunity for many people to celebrate what would otherwise be a bleak day.   Originally, I envisioned a huge rock concert-type event, but putting together such an event on such a short time line wouldn't work.  So, we're doing something different:   NEW YORK, NY (January 5, 2017) – Tickets are now on sale for Concert for America: Stand Up, Sing Out!, the first of a monthly benefit concert series with Broadway, TV, film and recording stars that will debut at The Town Hall on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 3:00pm, featuring performances by Betty Buckley, Sharon Gless, Andrea Martin, Jessie Mueller, Bebe Neuwirth, Rosie O’Donnell, Rosie Perez, Billy Porter, Chita Rivera, Brian Stokes Mitchell and more.  “By bringing together this spectacular group of artists to celebrate the diversity and hope that makes America its best, we hope this concert will lift spirits and remind people across the country that we are stronger united and our voices will be heard over the next four years,” Rudetsky and Wesley said. Proceeds will benefit several national organizations working to protect human rights, including Planned Parenthood, Southern Poverty Law Center, National Immigration Law Center and the Sierra Club Foundation. Tickets range from $25 to $50 and are available at TicketMaster.com and at The Town Hall box office (123 W 43rd St.). Participating performers are subject to change. For those unable to attend, the concert will be broadcast on Facebook Live at 3:00pm EST on January 20th, directed by Emmy Award winner Debbie Miller. Concert for America: Stand Up, Sing Out! is created and organized by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley in association with Your Kids, Our Kids (a 501(c)(3) corporation) and with the support of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. #NoOnlineExamNoVote We had Online classes, so we want Online exams (KTU 2021 Odd Sem)

Even though the covid condition has been more stable, it has not been fully eradicated from Kerala. Kerala Technological University(KTU) was of the view that 'Online classes were not sufficient for proper education', but now they are conducting offline semester examinations with even less study time than usual. Most colleges haven't finished teaching the full syllabus and many lack proper study materials. For a university with an average pass percentage of 30%, online teaching isn't enough to prepare us for the offline exams. Kerala Technological University(KTU) had already conducted online exams for final semesters last year, which proves that it is possible to conduct online exams as a substitute in the current situation. IIT's, NIT's and many other engineering colleges have already conducted online exams, so why not KTU. They teach us in online mode but want to examine us in offline mode, which is hypocritical, unfair, dangerous, and doesn't reflect the best interests of the students. So we request the examination to be conducted online rather than offline. So we humbly request everyone to sign so the proper authorities can have a clear view about the current academic situation and perspective of the students. Edit : #NoOnlineExamNoVote  #KeralaElections Guys we have been marginally successful with the final years, but nothing has been done for our intermediate semester students, that is, S3 and S5 students, who are waiting for a miracle to get them to pass this exam. Just before a week from the start of  the final years exams, KTU adjusted the timetable to give them more time to learn, which means it isn't too late for S3 and S5. So make noise and spread #NoOnlineExamNoVote and don't forget, elections are coming and all of us have votes!

Petition to BBMP Commissioner, BWSSB, Mayor of Bengaluru, Chief Minister of Government of Karnataka, Residents of Choodasandra, HOSA Road

Draw the attention of BBMP, BWSSB, Chief M of Government of Karnataka, Mayor of Bengaluru

For the past two months or so, the stretch of the Road between Choodasandra/ Nandini Junction Crossing and Silver Pearl Apartments on Amrita College Road/ HOSA Road has been in an extremely bad shape.  The overflowing Drainage/ Sewerage water has created puddles on the road emanating a foul stench and it is very difficult for the people to walk on the road ( since there is no pavement/ footpath worth the name ) and cars and other vehicles find it difficult to drive on the damaged road. And with the rains, the situation has been worsened.  People going to Offices, children going to school and other residents going out to shops or for other purposes are greatly inconvenienced due to the accumulation of the Sewerage water and rain water. Walking on the side is extremely dangerous since it is slushy.  I had complained to all the above authorities but apart from the acknowledgement from BBMP Commissioner and BWSSB, no further action has been taken. I had also spoken to the BBMP Official to whom the Complaint was assigned by BBMP Commissioner but nothing concrete has been done so far.  I would request the authorities concerned to look into the matter urgently and take such steps as may be necessary to plug the overflowing Drainage water and repair the damaged road at the earliest to ameliorate the sufferings of the residents of the locality. Further, footpaths/ sidewalks may please be laid so that people do not have to walk on the road and expose themselves to accidents. BBMP may please get either side of the road cleaned of garbage/ refuse since the stench while walking past them is unbearable.  An early action in the matter will be highly appreciated. S Ram

Free Sanitary Pads/Menstrual Cup by Govt of India to females living below the poverty line

As per a recent article in 'Times of India' & many other newspapers/websites, only 18% women in India have access to sanitary hygiene in India. Most of the women/girls from the remaining 82 % are using substitutes like unhygienic cloths & other unsafe alternatives like sand, ash, jute sack, leaves, newspapers, etc. Another report published by UNICEF and WaterAid found that more than a third of girls in South Asia miss school during their periods, mainly due to lack of access to toilets and pads in schools 12-year-old Bholi’s uterus was removed because she had contracted a reproductive tract infection. Bholi hails from a small village in Madhya Pradesh and represents a large population of Indian women who suffer at the hands of illiteracy. Just like Bholi, millions of women in India fall prey to low standards of sanitation and menstrual hygiene. These facts are devastating, shocking & an eye-opener for each one of us. Menstrual health is a comprehensive, multifaceted issue, and evidences have shown the dire need to address it. We certainly need to bring a change in the conditions of the women living below the poverty line and make them healthier & happy. Our Indian Constitution incorporates provisions guaranteeing everyone’s right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees the protection of life and personal liberty to every citizen. The Supreme Court has held that the right to live with human dignity, enshrined in Article 21, derives from the directive principles of state policy and therefore includes protection of health. Further, it has also been held that the right to health is integral to the right to life and the government has a constitutional obligation to provide health facilities. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In the recent Lok Sabha election campaign, political parties promised around Rs 5000/- to 6000/- per month to those families who are living below the poverty line whereas the cost of hygienic sanitary pads ranges from Rs 10/- - Rs 12/- for a month's usage. We urge honorable prime minister Sh. Narendra Modi ji & government of India to hear the silent cry of these poor women/girls, who are suffering every month because of the lack of hygienic amenities, and provide them eco-friendly pads, menstrual cups or tampons. Let's all create a noise & make an effort to eliminate the monster of period poverty from India. Please support and sign this petition.

Petition to International Maritime Organization (IMO)

Petition the International Maritime Organization to Stop Plastic Pellet Pollution at Sea

In May 2021, the MV X-Press Pearl spilt 1,680 tonnes of plastic pellets and 9,700 tonnes of other plastics nine miles off the Sri Lankan coast. With plastic accumulating on beaches up to 2 meters high, it is one of the worst environmental disasters in the country's history, and the single largest plastic pellet pollution event the world has ever seen. It continues to cause overwhelming economic, social and environmental impacts, and a legacy of toxic pollution that will continue to have profound and enduring impacts for many generations to come. This incident has resulted in the severe pollution of 750 km of pristine, biodiverse coastline and deaths of many hundreds of charismatic marine species such as turtles, whales and dolphins. Consumption of fish, which is the main protein source for more than 40% of Sri Lankans, has reduced drastically, and the livelihood of fishers is severely impacted due to coastal fishing ban across the entire West coast. Plastic pellets (also known as 'nurdles') are tiny lentil-sized balls measuring 5mm or less. They are the feedstock of the industry - and are melted and moulded by manufacturing companies into plastic products. Given their small size, they are easily and often spilt at each stage along the pellet supply chain, and increasingly large scale spillage events are occurring at sea. However, despite being found on almost every coastline surveyed, and with growing evidence that pellets act as toxic sponges and are eaten by a wide range of marine life, they are currently not considered to be persistent, hazardous, pollutants. Stricter classification under the International Maritime Organization would mean pellets are handled at sea akin to other harmful and hazardous substances. This classification would mean far stricter handling and labelling instructions are enforced, below deck stowage and adequate disaster response protocols that would limit the fallout felt in Sri Lanka in the wake of future shipping disasters. From November 22nd - November 25th, the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee will meet. On the agenda is a proposal from Sri Lanka to establish international guidelines and requirements for the transportation of plastic pellets that are so urgently needed. A show of public support in advance of this meeting will be enormously helpful towards securing such measures, and raising the profile of this little-known but highly destructive form of plastic pollution.
