Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve has been an iconic tourist attractant and the home/ breeding ground of many species of wildlife for decades. The massive volcanic feature is surrounded by beautiful Australian bush which is the habitat for animals such as wallaby’s, kangaroo’s, emu, koala, thousands of bird species, snakes and lizards. However, the reserve is encompassed by a public road (Lake View Rd) that is regularly used by both tourists for the stunning views and the local public. This road has designated speed zones of 60-80kms/hr, which result in regular deaths of wildlife being struck by vehicles. Although there are speed signs around Lake View Rd, it is almost a weekly occurrence that wildlife are hit by cars who have no time to break or are speeding.
We, the people of Tower Hill, Koroit & surrounding areas request the Moyne Shire Council to lower the speed limit to 40kms/hr, and in addition to this install speed-bumps around the entire rim of the crater, including Lake View Road, Scenic Route and the portion of Port Fairy Road that falls between the end of Lake View Road and Lowrey Road on the western side. There is no point installing speed signs alone, as it is obvious that this has not worked so far. Locals report people speeding around the Lake View Road daily, giving rise for the need of a physical restriction to this action.
