Ban the use of wild animals in circuses

[Spanish] [French] [Italian] [Dutch] On Easter Monday 2018 there was a road crash in Spain involving five circus elephants. It left one elephant dead and two severely injured. It was only a matter of chance that no people were hurt. This tragedy could have been avoided - that’s why I’m calling for the use of wild animals in circuses to be banned in the European Union. Recent reports show shocking incidents involving the public and wild animals in circuses across Europe. These often involve circuses and animals which, travel all around the continent endangering the health and safety of European citizens. In Spain, a few weeks ago a hippo escaped for the fifth reported time. The elephants involved in this latest incident were on their way to their next performance location with Spanish Circus Gottani. They had been smuggled out of Germany and were forced to France, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland and, eventually, Spain. The family who owns the elephants has a record of negligent behavior which has led to several incidents. The large majority of EU Member States has already banned or severely restricted the use of wild animals in circuses. The veterinary community has already urged the European and other competent authorities to simply prohibit the use of wild mammals in travelling circuses. We too are calling for the end of the practice. It is time for the European Union to act. Only this can guarantee a solution to the physical and emotional suffering of wild animals in circuses and to the related public security risks. Please sign and share.

Stop the Proposed Fence at the Tulelake Municipal Airport, site of the former Tule Lake Segregation Center, California

Modoc County, California, approved a 5-year $3.5 million airport development plan that includes a massive, 3-mile long, barbed-wire topped 8-foot high fence.  Having an airport, even a small and primitive airport, operating in the middle of the Tule Lake concentration camp site, is inappropriate and demeans the memory of more than 24,000 people who were incarcerated in Tule Lake. The proposed fence closes off remembrance of this civil and human rights tragedy, and it will destroy the integrity of this unique historic site. The fence will eliminate opportunities for Japanese Americans and others to visit, reflect and mourn. This exclusion will be a permanent legacy of Modoc County’s and the Federal Aviation Administration's failure to comprehend the traumatic injustice created by the racism, fed by wartime greed and hysteria and failed political leadership that led to the mass incarceration. The Tule Lake site has not yet been comprehensively surveyed to document surface and subsurface historic WWII resources. Consequently, it is a priority to identify structures and artifacts before more damage to the site takes place.  In July 2014, the Tule Lake Committee sought legally-mandated environmental review of the entire airport area, which occupies two-thirds of the former Tule Lake site.  However, instead of conducting careful examination of the entire area WITHIN the fence project, including subsurface review, the County and the FAA have argued their environmental responsibility is confined to surveying only a narrow strip of land where the 3-mile long fence would directly lie.    In the past year, the Tule Lake Committee participated in talks with Modoc County, the FAA, other state and federal agencies and local representatives, hoping to promote understanding of the historic site’s significance, urging it be protected, not destroyed.  Seeking a long-term solution to the problem of preserving an irreplaceable historic site, we raised the issue of moving the Tulelake airport to a less sensitive nearby location. It was clear to all interested parties that a small airport can be moved.  It is not possible to move a historic site. Thank you for signing our petition! We are grateful for your support. STOP THE DUMPING OF TOXIC DREDGE SLUDGE CLOSE TO NEW ZEALAND'S AOTEA/GREAT BARRIER ISLAND

We are appalled to read the news today, 12 March 2019, on https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/382563/green-light-to-dump-more-sludge-near-great-barrier-island (and other news outlets), that confirms a marine consent has been granted to dump more than 8 million cubic metres of sediment dredged from Auckland Harbour over the next 35 years onto the "Northern Disposal Area", which is only 25 kilometres east of New Zealand's precious taonga, Aotea/Great Barrier Island. The news report states: "The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has granted Coastal Resources Limited a 35-year marine consent to dispose of 250,000 cubic metres of dredged sediment each year. The company already has permission to dump 50,000 cubic metres of sediment at the disposal site - known as the Northern Disposal Area - which is 25 kilometres east of Great Barrier Island. In June last year, it applied to expand its operation. Coastal Resources Limited dredges material from sites around Auckland and Waikato, including marinas. The EPA received 76 submissions about the application and the vast majority of them opposed the granting of consent. But in its final decision, the EPA's decision-making committee said that any potential adverse effects on the environment of any disposal would be restricted to the disposal area and negligible beyond the boundary. Further, any potential adverse effects on existing interests, like commercial fishing, would also be negligible beyond the boundary. Great Barrier Island Local Board chair Izzy Fordham said they were disappointed by the EPA's decision. "We're no scientists by any sense of the word, our concerns were for the environmental impact of it, the effect on mammals and sea life, and the whole biosecurity risk that goes with it." The local board does not have the resources to be able to appeal the decision, Ms Fordham said. "I just sincerely hope that it doesn't impact on our ocean environment - in 2019 we really need to be doing better for our oceans." Local iwi also opposed the consent application. Its member and marine scientists Andrew Jeffs said Coastal Resources never addressed their concerns about the impact of vessel noise on marine mammals. "It can stop them feeding, it can mess up social groupings, it can stop them from communicating with one another and create difficulties for them in finding food." Dr Jeffs said it was surprising the EPA gave Coastal Resources the go-ahead, despite rigorous scientific evidence about the problems underwater sound can cause. The Hauraki Gulf was recognised internationally as one of the most pristine habitats for marine mammals, he said. While it was more expensive, Dr Jeffs said other options for dumping sediment on-land should be considered. "Many of the people who own boats in marinas around Auckland are people who love the Hauraki Gulf, they love the fact that they see marine mammals when they're out on their boats and they'd probably be prepared to pay a bit more for their marina space in order to protect what they love about the Gulf." Coastal Resources did not respond to requests for comment." This is unacceptable - we, the undersigned, demand that this marine consent is revoked and Great Barrier Island waters and vicinity are safely preserved for future generations.  Regardless of the official statement that any disposal "would be restricted to the disposal area and negligible beyond the boundary", in line with the precautionary principle we call for this decision to be reversed immediately.
