Vote against the proposal to change Yale's grading system

    1. Josh Kalla
    2. Petition by

      Josh Kalla

      New Haven, CT

This proposal is troubling because it could negatively affect Yale's atmosphere. It could make students far too focused on grades and it could make the academic environment more competitive and stressful. Please sign this petition to make sure students' voices are heard.

This will negatively affect my sister who deals with enough stress as it is.

The proposed grading system is proven to create unduly stressful and overly competetive learning environments in which "learning" itself suffers for the sake of a number grade.

I'll be graduated by the time this could be implemented, but it would break my heart for all the future Yalies to pass through this brilliant place to not have the freedom to take educational risks, make lifelong friends through academic collaboration, and enjoy the ever so occasional day without stressing about GRADES. Please, consider the strength of our EDUCATION, not the delicateness of our GPAs.

The grading system is a severely flawed and insufficient way of actually giving feedback to students. If the Yale faculty is serious about increasing academic rigour in courses and allowing instructors' responses to student work to be meaningful and heard, they should do that -- not by turning coursework into a dogfight to secure the extra percentage point, but by actively encouraging in-depth written evaluations of students' progress at several times during the semester. This attempt to centralize the way grading works unnecessarily transgresses boundaries between departments and disciplines and adds a competitive element that can only get in the way of the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake.

I think yale students are the self driven type that are already too concerned about grades. Let's take the focus off grades and try to channel the focus to learning and fostering great friendships at Yale!
