WRAL responds, denies posting addresses and stands by "outing people"
Concealed weapon permit holders’ personal information has always been part of the public record, including name and street numbers. We understand the potential concerns with posting that specific information and we proactively stripped the 78,000 file database of that information.
This is not a gun ownership database. You can’t look at it and determine which houses have guns and which don’t. In NC, for example, you are not required to have a permit for a shotgun. Therefore, there are many streets where guns are located that are not indicated in the database. The database only identifies how many concealed permit holders there are on any given street. "
So they are completely ignoring small streets, and potentially targeting Permit Holders, even those that might be victims of domestic abuse or rape. And the fact that the did a poor job of stripping the data.
WE STRONGLY URGE WRAL TO REMOVE THIS DATA AND STOP ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF PERMIT HOLDERS.
