    1. Women40% Proposal Gets EU Parliament Support

On 20 November 2013, the European Parliament voted with an overwhelming majority (459 for, 148 against and 81 abstentions) to back the European Commission’s proposed law to improve the gender balance in Europe’s company boardrooms. The strong endorsement by the Members of the European Parliament means the Commission’s proposal has now been approved by one of the European Union’s two co-legislators. Member States in the Council now need to reach agreement on the draft law, amongst themselves and with the European Parliament, in order for it to enter the EU statute book.

The message from the first inter-service consultation on Commissioner Reding's draft directive to get 40% women on the boards of European companies this past week was, alas, not good. On the other hand, I am happy to report that we have over 1000 signatures on our Change.org petition supporting the move!!! Great work, everyone! As Ms. Reding said, she refuses to give up on the issue and the topic will be returned to the commission next month. So for her sake, and all of ours, let's keep the momentum going, and thank you for continuing to spread the word!

Because women not only deserve to be more represented in BoDs but companies will only win if that happens. But this alone will not make the trick; we also need to find ways to ensure that more women get to the top, to top executive positions, so this is far from being enough to turn the situation around.

It is important to regularize the lost position of women inside our society. We don't need any sort of gender discrimination.

I think it's important that women are empowered with higher positions to show our little girls, the women of the future, that they matter and that the importance of their voice is not linked to their gender.
