    5. Demolition Rumors

There are rumors spreading that WMU officials are planning to begin demolition of the East Campus buildings this Spring (after May1). They apparently don't care what the public or the alumnae think. They are a public university but are not willing to be very transparent to the tax paying public. Please spread the word and redouble our efforts. Thank you.

    6. Tour of East Campus

I toured the East Campus today ,with a radio reporter, and as we walked around the campus I was reminded of just how beautiful (even on a blustery winter day) this space truly is. The campus design by the Olmsted firm , and the buildings' placement and styles all contribute to make this a very special place.Contrary to the administration's assessment of the buildings' condition I found them to be in extraordinary condition even after years and years of intentional neglect. The brick, the limestone ,and the terra cotta all were in incredibly good shape and in most cases only need a good cleaning. The mortar was in very good shape. For buildings that are anywhere from 70 to 108 years old they look like they could stand for another 100 years - let's hope they do. The WMU spin machine will try and paint a different picture to make their case for demolition, but it is just not true.

True to form WMU has not responded to any criticisms and will not update the public with a timeline for the demolitions. It's plan is not to engage the community until it's too late to have an impact. What the public doesn't know they can't respond to.

History is so important to our community. Destroying history will be taking so much from the future generations

Isn't it OBVIOUS? Destroying these gorgeous buildings would be criminal. Period.

As a former WMU student, I used to sit on those steps overlooking the city and revel in the beauty of those buildings. What a travesty that these buildings can not be saved

Western has so few historical buildings, the loss of the East campus buildings would be devastating to our university and the entire Kalamazoo community. Laura Smaling
