Waukesha: Don't Waste Lake Michigan Water

    1. Sponsored by

      Clean Wisconsin

The Great Lakes provide drinking water for nearly 40 million people and invaluable opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating and more. There is nothing else in the world like the Great Lakes — we can't afford not to protect this critical resource.

The city of Waukesha proposes to take water out of Lake Michigan, despite the city's location outside the Great Lakes water system. Waukesha is the first community to make such a request under the Great Lakes Compact, a historic agreement that protects Great Lakes water from being sold to the highest bidder.Thankfully, the Compact sets a high bar for requests like this.

While Waukesha faces serious water problems, using Great Lakes water should be a last resort. Waukesha should prioritize water conservation before tapping into the Great Lakes.

As the first community to apply for Great Lakes water under the Compact, Waukesha must be a leading example to protect this national treasure. Waukesha has a plan for water conservation but has failed to put sufficient effort or resources into it.

Please sign this petition telling Waukesha not to waste Great Lakes water by working aggressively to conserve water.

Everyone needs to conserve. Even when it is plentiful. If you're not using it... turn it off.

Using Lake Michigan water for Waukesha is a short term solution to a long term problem, conservation is the solution.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul never works in the end....you need to take a serious look at water usage in the county and implement steps to reduce usage and conserve OUR water resources. Waste NOT, Want NOT!!

Clean water is a finite resource. We must conserve what is around us before we attempt to outsource or import anything.
