Victory

After 4,000 of you signed my petition the school gave in, and decided to allow my picture in the yearbook! I want to thank you all so much for your support. I am in tears over this victory! Your support and your signatures helped so much. Remember, it's ok to challenge the status quo when the status quo is unjust. Stay strong and proud of who you are. And make sure to use Change.org -- they helped out tremendously. It only takes one person standing up to inspire others to take action. I love you guys, -Matt Jolley

My name is Matt Jolley and I need your help.

I'm a senior at Worland High School in Washakie County, Wyoming. I'm 18-years-old, I'm openly gay, and I love photography.

I dream of being a professional photographer someday. In fact, my mom took my senior photo this year, and I edited it myself. But because I chose to hold a rainbow flag in my senior picture, school officials won't let me use my portrait unless I pay for an advertisement.

That's not fair.

My principal says they can't print my picture because it would be too much of a political statement. But it's not uncommon for students to take senior photos with props that symbolize who they are and what they care about. Athletes can wear their uniforms. Band members can hold their band instruments. So why can't an openly gay senior hold a rainbow flag?

I'm proud of who I am. Is it too much to ask that my school be proud of me, too? Please sign my petition urging the Washakie County School District to support all of their students -- gay and straight.

I'm bisexual, and I believe that everyone should be able to show who they are and/or what they support.
