Wandsworth Council: Protect Wheatsheaf with an AssetOfCommunityValue listing + A4D

Wandsworth Council: Protect Wheatsheaf with an AssetOfCommunityValue listing + A4D

    1. Petition by

      Tooting Wheatsheaf Supporters

The Wheatsheaf is a much-valued local community pub. The proposed sale of the freehold to developers may involve the loss of the pub use either from wholesale redevelopment or from a change of use of the existing building. The local community wishes to protect the pub use and the present building, which is of local heritage merit. Wandsworth can facilitate this protection by adding the Wheatsheaf to the Register of Community Assets and by issuing an Article 4 Direction to prevent demolition and/or change of use. Because it is not protected by any heritage status, it can at present be summarily demolished or converted to some non-pub uses, including retail, without a planning application.

Because it's a great pub and we already have enough supermarkets/shops nearby and do not need another one.

The Wheatsheaf adds life and brings business to an otherwise dull area of Tooting

This pub is part of our architectural heritage. So many of these Public Houses have disappeared fron the streets of London.

Pubs and the communities they serve need protection from being asset stripped by tied pubco's and developers whose only interest in them is the easy profit they can take out of the buildings without consideration for their true value, when they are well run, as social hubs and centres of community activity. A good pub is like glue to a good community and this must be protected.
