“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.”
President Lyndon Johnson

On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson, flanked by civil rights icons Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, signed into law the Voting Rights Act. This vital law explicitly outlawed states from interfering with the right of their citizens to cast a ballot on the basis of race or ethnicity.

It also, through Section 4, required certain states and municipalities with a history of discriminatory voting practices to receive pre-clearance from the federal government before any changes could be made to voting procedures.

During the past few years, legislatures from Ohio to North Carolina to Texas to Pennsylvania were hard at work to suppress the vote of those they deemed unlikely to vote for them in 2012. Due to the pre-clearance requirement, harsh new voter ID laws and redistricting plans were rejected or delayed by federal courts in states like Texas, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, in June of this year, the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the VRA.

Since this dagger, states have pushed forward at record speeds with voter suppression, working to eliminate early voting, same-day voting and put in place many other unfair rules that will hurt seniors, students, minorities, working class families and those who are disabled.

Today, I ask you to stand with me and sign my petition demanding that voting rights be respected, that access to the ballot be always expanded and never restricted, and that discrimination, whether it be based on racial animus or ideological differences, no longer be tolerated!

Please sign my petition to Protect our Vote and Revive the Voting Rights Act Today! There is no equalizer like the vote, because when you step into that ballot box, each one of us is truly created equal.

Onward,
Senator Nina Turner

P.S. – Only with our voices united will Congress and the states act to restore and protect our voting rights. Sign my petition today!

Protect Our Voting Rights

Sincerely,

Because people trying to take us back to the "good old days" of Jim Crow are the only ones who would really want a law like the Voting Rights Act appealed.

BECAUSE I AM OF COLOR AND YOUNG AND FEEL THAT OUR ANCESTORS DID NOT FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS TO VOTE FOR US TO JUST SIT BACK AND LET THEM TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US.

Our voices should not be taking away for personal reason such as income, student, etc. everyone has the right to vote and should be allowed to vote.
