THE VOLUSIA COUNTY BOARD REFERENDUM DID NOT PASS. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AND PASS IT ON. SHOW THE VOLUSIA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD AND GOVERNOR THAT  WE WILL NOT ALLOW THESE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS TO BE CUT FROM OUR SCHOOLS. OUR CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE PLEASE HELP

The One Mill Tax was NOT approved by the voters, the following program cuts will be made in 2013-2014 Flood the media outlets Forward this to all your friends and families Make sure all the students , parents and teachers throughout the Volusia county schools see this and sign it. Students, some of you could not vote in this year's election. This does not mean that your voice cannot be heard Make it loud This is your future!! You can make a difference

  1. Projected minimum $25 million deficit for fiscal year 2013-14 is the equivalent loss of nearly 500 teachers.
    • Further reduction in the number of Advanced Placement high school classes
    • Further reduction in middle and high school elective classes, including the arts
    • Reduction/elimination of science fair, social studies fair, field studies/trips
    • Reduction of elementary music and art teachers resulting in these subjects being taught by the classroom teacher
    • Reduction/elimination of various instructional programs, including Project IBIS (environmental/science learning program) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
    • Reduction of school district salary payments for teachers to serve as directors for band and chorus, sponsors for clubs, coaches for athletics, and extra duties for supervision and security
    • Major reduction in the number of substitute teacher days allocated to each school that results in combining students into other classes and grouping students into gymnasiums and cafeterias when teachers are absent
    • Instructional materials provided as classroom sets, rather than for each individual student
  2. Loss of a high number of teaching positions that result in a further loss of student instructional programs and extra-curricular activities, including athletics.

  3. Ability to meet Florida Statute class size requirement is highly unlikely with a reduction in the number of teachers, resulting in a financial penalty to the school district.
    • Significantly higher class sizes in middle and high school core academic classes and even higher class sizes in elective courses
  4. Other changes that will impact the instructional program at schools:
    • Increased number of combination multi-grade classes at every elementary school (example—combining grade 2 and 3 students into one class with one teacher)
    • Increased number of elementary schools that share a principal with another elementary school and further reduction of assistant principals at secondary schools.

It seems to me that Volusia county is more interested in promoting special events than our children's education Then again, we could always go see the goats

I was disappointed that we were a mere blurb on the bottom of the page The headline at the top of page one was "Goats take to stage at Volusia county fair" What is wrong with this picture? I place the blame on the News Journal, the very paper that advised its readers to vote no on the referendum. Many students voiced their concerns and made valid points . I did not say "America is slipping" I said "we are not making progress with our education. We are reverting back to the one room school house while other countries are moving ahead of us in education" I also went on to say that as a Realtor, families will not be moving to our area if the schools do not offer these programs. It will become a domino effect if no new families purchase homes there will be a decline in business. Look what is happening in surrounding counties such as Brevard where their referendum did not pass. They will now be closing 4 schools. Is this what you want?

We educate the whole child. It is with the arts and athletics that the whole child's skills are nutured. Long after the multiplication are learned, the student will sing, play, entertain, enjoy, and thrive with the arts and athletic skills learned as a young student.

My son is an artist and a musician now because he was introduced to these arts in school. Children who have these talents should be allowed to discover them and nurture them at an early age.

The performing arts play a huge role in my life. I am in the band, and my life revolves around it. I want to go to college for music education, and with band in high school, i have a chance of getting a college scholarship. Take it away? you might as well just take my life.

My oldest daughter was in the orchestra, and it changed her life. My son is an amazing artist and took art classes and volunteers at his old highschool and it changed his life. My youngest in 8th grade is in orchestra and sits second highest seat. It has changed her life.
