An important part of democracy is transparency and accountability. The video recording of legislative sessions is an important tool to help citizens, pundits and organisations understand what our representatives are discussing and agreeing on our behalves.

By making it challenging to obtain and view the recordings of the general assembly sessions Virginia are blocking the democratic process by short-circuiting the feedback loop by which citizens can hold them accountable.

Hosting video isn't free, but it's getting increasingly cheap and there are a number of possible hosts, such as Youtube, that Virginia could use to make it free.

There is a Kickstarter campaign (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1756896662/liberate-virginias-legislative-video) to buy DVDs and provide them online to circumvent this problem, but it should not require private individuals or non-profits to make these videos available.

To:
Virginia General Assembly
Please make all the video recorded session of the Virginia general assembly freely available online at zero cost to individual citizens.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
