The debate on gun control is obviously a highly polarizing issue in our country. With the tragic events that happened over the weekend, the topic is yet again in the spotlight. Despite the divided opinion, I'm certain we can agree that something must be done to prevent this from happening over and over again. I have therefore come up with five common sense measures to reduce the likelihood of these mass shootings. This is intended to be simple, reasonable and effective.
I am running for City Council in my hometown and we have a crime problem. Fortunately, to date, we have not had to deal with the mass shootings that our country is becoming all too familiar with. However, I want to ensure that common sense and reasonable measures are in place to reduce the likelihood of such incidents occurring across our nation.
- Ban assault weapons
- Limit magazine clips to no more than 10 bullets per magazine
- No more than 1 gun purchase per month (not to exceed 18 purchases in a 36 month period)
- Limit ammunition purchases to no more than 250 rounds per month
- Ban of folding stocks
I recognize that this will not prevent all gun crimes or murders, but speed limits don't stop speeders, yet we recognize the necessity of having some common sense rules of the road. Now it is time we have some common sense gun control measures.
I petition the United States Government to adopt these rules and to not add loopholes or complicate the law by adding a number of amendments. Simply, define what constitutes an assault weapon and then draft this bill with these measures and no more, then vote on it.
