Urge Yalumba to Stop Funding Cruelty

    1. Petition by

Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses

The Yalumba Wine Company has a fine reputation as a truly successful Australian business.

No doubt the company does not want a reputation for supporting animal cruelty.

On April 5 2010, the Yalumba Wine Company sponsored a feature jumps race in which two horses were killed. The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses wrote to Yalumba shortly after explaining that the poor reputation jumps racing holds is not conducive to that of a fine Australian business, and suggested that the company should no longer sponsor jumps racing.

The company's director responded commenting on the deaths of Marc Of Thunder and Satu San: "Accidents do occur and we learn to deal with them." He later stated "... we see flat and jumps racing as sporting traditions we are comfortable supporting."

The issue here is that falls and deaths in jumps racing are not accidents. They occur frequently and at twenty times higher than that of flat races. Every trainer who enters a horse in a jumps race knows that there is a high likelihood of that horse not returning from the track. But that is "tradition."

Please write to Yalumba and urge them to withdraw their financial support of jumps racing, or risk being associated with one of Australia's most 'traditional' forms of public animal cruelty.
