The Colorado legislature recently passed HB 1151, which contains a number of important anti-human trafficking measures.

If enacted, this law will help trafficking victims by giving them the right to bring a civil action against their traffickers. It also allows minor victims of trafficking to expunge their juvenile records of prostitution-related offenses that were committed during and as a result of their being trafficked. Likewise it allows adult victims to seal criminal records pertaining to prostitution-related offenses that were committed during and as a result of their being trafficked.

Additionally, this bill requires escort services and massage parlors, both of which are businesses where trafficking can be found, to provide notices stating that human trafficking and involuntary servitude are prohibited, and provide contact information for an organization that assists victims of human trafficking.

Finally, HB 1151 deems property used in the commission of human trafficking offenses a public nuisance, and provides for its seizure and forfeiture.

Most people think slavery ended more than 150 years ago, with the Emancipation Proclamation and the 14th Amendment. The truth is, slavery is at least as prevalent now as it was before Queen Victoria's coronation. You can strike a blow against slavery. I urge you to do so.

The cries for help for the indentured slaves at the Broadmoor Hotel have been coming my way for years, including for a rape victim who could not report her rape.

To protect victims of abuse and involuntary servitude. To stand up for those who are oppressed and cannot defend themselves. Human Trafficking must be stopped and brought to the attention of the people.
