Urge Congress and the Secretary of Energy to Protect Us from Nuclear Waste Contamination

    1. Petition by

      Hanford Challenge

Protect us from the dangers of leaking high-level radioactive waste at the Hanford Nuclear site. Please support the construction of new nuclear waste storage tanks at Hanford.

The Hanford Nuclear Site stores 56 million gallons of deadly nuclear waste in 177 underground nuclear waste tanks – a third of which have failed, and some are currently leaking radioactive and chemical waste into the environment.  Located near the Columbia River in Eastern Washington State, most of these nuclear waste tanks are substantially beyond their anticipated life, and eventually all of them will fail.

There is not enough room in stable double-shell nuclear waste tanks to accommodate waste from the leaking tanks.  The Waste Treatment Plant – which is supposed to be the answer to removing and immobilizing the highly radioactive tank waste -- is hopelessly behind schedule, and will not be able to start treating any tank waste unless its technical, design, and safety problems are fixed.  We cannot rely on this plant to quickly address the leaking tank issue.

We are out of time and out of space. Hanford is between a rock and a hard place, and new tanks are the only answer that makes sense to protect the environment from more leaked contamination. Oregon and Washington Governors, as well as the Hanford Advisory Board, have strongly urged Hanford to immediately build new tanks – but Congress has not acted.

Tell your representatives and the Secretary of Energy:
Protect Us and the Environment, Build New Tanks NOW!

I'm lost for words...... (smh). The sad part is I had no idea about this until I listened to Clyde Lewis radio show. I'm hoping a lot more uninformed individuals heard the message about this dangerous situation and like me, help to do something about getting this taken care of and gaining more attention.

Hanford workers are being sickened by waste vapors, and the contamination could spread..
