Victory

Zach Heffernen: The dedicated students, faculty, and staff at the University of Iowa, combined with the citizens of Iowa City, poured their hearts out on saving the center through social media, writing campaigns, this petition, public demonstrations and more. Human Rights have become a legacy at the University of Iowa.

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) has as its mission the promotion and protection of human rights at home and abroad through distinguished multidisciplinary leadership in human rights research, education, and public service to The University of Iowa, its surrounding communities, the State of Iowa, and beyond.

What the Center provides for students:
-Local, Domestic, and International Internships
-Human Rights resources
-Courses and mentorship in Human Rights
-Human Rights certificate
-Guest speakers with extensive experience in Human Rights Issues
-Books and resources for students interested in Human Rights
-Training for Human Rights advocacy
-Essay competitions
-Community events

Signing this petition is imperative because this collection of signatures will demonstrate to the University of Iowa that the Center for Human Rights is valued and wanted by the students and the surrounding community. Therefore, the University will continue funding the Center and recognizing the importance of Human Rights to the UI campus.

Human rights are sometimes denied due to race or creed. We are all created equal and this should remembered and recognized.

Do you realize that one of the signs of fascism is a disdain for human rights? Is that what you want to be?

Because I believe human rights education and the opportunity and the resources to promote human rights is vital and necessary for progress.

As a masters student at UI, I had an internship for a year and a half at the UICHR. This was a monumental and critical influence in my goal to pursue human health and rights in an environmental and occupational sense. It worked-- I now work as an Industrial Hygienist for the U.S. government and examine the potential links between occupation and human health every day. I owe a lot to UICHR for opening my eyes to what essentially was my future career.

Because Burns Weston has been one of the leading advocates for human rights and the center is needed to continue his work
