United States Senate

Block Passage of the Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012

    1. Petition by

      Dawn Serra

      Missoula, MT

Originating in the House as HR 4089 and in the Senate as S 2066, this bill would gut protections in the Wilderness Act. It would give hunting, fishing, recreational shooting, and fish and wildlife management priority in Wilderness, replacing the foundational priority of protecting wilderness character. This bill would allow endless, extensive habitat manipulations in Wilderness under the guise of "wildlife conservation" and for providing hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting experiences. It would remove Wilderness Act prohibitions against motor vehicle use and allow the construction of roads, dams, buildings, or other structures within Wildernesses for these activities. There would be no meaningful limit to what federal land managers could do in the name of providing opportunities for hunting, fishing, recreational shooting, or wildlife management, and decisions would be exempt from review under the National Environmental Policy Act. Paraded by its supporters as an "interpretation" of the Wilderness Act, it is in fact an evisceration of our country's foremost land conservation law.

What is left of any pristine land must be forever protected from human decimation in ANY form. Our wilderness areas are all that's left of the foundation that Nature still has to provide us with a livable environment. The cycles that determine oxygen production, clean water, plant and animal diversity all depend on our dedication to preserving and protecting these lands.

We need to look beyond the greedy NOW! attitudes and show more concern for the future of this unique place we call home.

This petition letter may confuse some people a little. The current Wilderness act allows hunting on Wilderness lands when they are administered by an agency where such activity is legal (most Forest land, yes; most Park land, no). Hunting in itself is not the issue here. What the current act does not allow (and what the Sportsmen's Heritage Act would allow) is mechanical or motorized travel (bicycles, ATVs, snow machines, trucks, helicopters..), and permanent structures such as cabins, hotels or roads. What's at stake here is not whether wildlife can be hunted or not, but HOW the hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts could access the Wilderness areas.

Like I said below, there are certainly many places where mechanical and motorized access of our public lands is appropriate. There are places where roads and cabins and hotels are wonderful. Our Wilderness areas, however, are special, and we as a society deserve to provide ourselves and our future generations with these last very few remnants of our once wild continent in the most natural state possible, which is what the Wilderness Act does. Wilderness gives us a place to immerse ourselves in a piece of the earth untouched by man-it gives us a glimpse into the past. We are able to test our own strengths and find a bit of solitude. Much of the clean water we drink in major cities nationwide come from these wild watersheds. The lessons we can learn about ourselves, natural processes and relationships are far more valuable than another set of roads, hotels, and atv trails could ever be.

Please senators and congressmen, do not pass the Sportmen's Heritage Act, or any other act that would "eviscerate our country's foremost land conservation law." We need some land set aside in its most natural state; we need Wilderness.

Public Lands are one of my favorite things about this great nation of ours, and Wilderness is one of my favorite things about our public lands. It gives us a chance to test ourselves, to find solitude and peace, it provides us with clean water, and gives wild animals a place to roam freely. There is a time and place for motorized and mechanical recreation, but our Wilderness is not that place. It is priceless, and deserves our protection. It is a gift from those who came before us, and we should protect it for our sons and daughters to enjoy as well.

Our planet is in enough trouble as it is without letting those who have no sense of conservation manipulate our wonderful mother earth.

Keep nature natural, and the wilderness wild! Keep human interference to a minimum, and protect the animals who call these areas home - no hunting or fishing! No construction projects! Leave Mother Nature and her creatures alone!
