United States House of Representatives: APAs Demand Congress Pass a Fair and Commonsense Immigration Reform Bill

    1. Petition by

      OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates

Asian Pacific Islanders – whether documented or undocumented, citizen or legal permanent resident – are Americans. We are America. And we deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity. OCA calls on our Congressional officials to pass a bill that:

1. Creates a pathway for citizenship for the over 11 million undocumented immigrants and DREAMers in the United States;
2. Ensures the family immigration category retains siblings and children over 31;
3. Assures that due process rights of all people are protected while they are in detention and deportation proceedings;
4. Provides adequate protection to prohibiting profiling in all of its forms.

Immigration reform is a moral and economic imperative – it is the Asian Pacific American (APA) issue. Right now, there are over one million undocumented Asian Pacific Islanders out of the 11 million total undocumented immigrants in the United States, individuals who may not report hate crimes, domestic violence, assaults because they are afraid that they and their family may be deported.

APAs also overwhelming immigrate to the US through the family immigration system. In 2007, APA families used 64% of all visas issued to adult married children of US citizens and 75% of all visas issued to siblings of US citizens. The Senate bill and the most recently proposed House Bill ELIMINATES siblings and children over 31 from the family category. The only way for these individuals to reunite with their families in the United States would be through a merit-system – which disadvantages women, those without access to education, refugees, and individuals with refugee backgrounds. It is unfair and unjust for our families and our community.

Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement detains and deports members of our community daily. We must ensure that these enforcement methods are not conducted because of racial profiling during any of the process. ICE must also ensure that the due process rights of all people are protected while they are in detention and deportation proceedings. It is inhumane and a waste of taxpayer money to hold a low-risk individual indefinitely.

Please sign this petition to call on Congress to pass a fair and commonsense comprehensive immigration reform bill now! Our community cannot wait any longer. For every signature, OCA will send a postcard to your congressional official saying:

“The Asian Pacific American Community supports fair and commonsense immigration reform. As your constituent, I demand that you pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that:

1. Creates a pathway for citizenship for the over 11 million undocumented immigrants and DREAMers in the United States;
2. Ensures the family immigration category retains siblings and children over 31;
3. Assures that due process rights of all people are protected while they are in detention and deportation proceedings;
4. Provides adequate protection to prohibiting profiling in all of its forms.

We cannot wait any longer – 11 million lives are in your hands. We are America. Immigrants are America. I am America.”

Please sign the petition today and demand change and reform from all of our Congressional Officials. Please send this petition to at least 2 other people, spread the word, especially to your Asian Pacific American family, friends, and colleagues. APAs are part of the immigration narrative, and we cannot continue to be left out of the conversation - our Congressional Officials need to hear us.

      My parents and I immigrated from Thailand to the US as a baby and it saddens me to hear of such news that affects many immigrant families who come to the U.S. in search for a better life.

      We need to be fair and just to our immigrants who came to this country seeking freedom and work to support their families. Our ancestors came here with the same hope for a new beginning.
