Troop 89, Bradenton, FL: Reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy

We, the Scouts and community members of Bradenton, FL petition the adult leadership of Troop 89 to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

All around this country, the Boy Scouts of America has been discriminating against members of the LGBT community by not allowing them to join as leaders or scouts. We as the outstanding troop that we are, need to outwardly condemn BSA's policy and set an example for the rest of our district, council, and organization.

Among service organizations, the Boy Scouts are increasingly isolating themselves with their discriminatory policy. Organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as well as the 4H Club all welcome gay kids as well as adult leaders.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out against the ban on gay Scouts and leaders and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

NOTE: We encourage everyone to join this campaign, but if you're a current or former Scout or leader, please say so in the "Why People Are Signing" section. Thanks!

This is a message I have received from my scoutmaster:
As Scoutmaster of Troop 89, I ask my boys and adults to hold up the 12 points of the Scout Law. I do not, and will not, ask any of my members about details of their private lives. I expect that their actions will prove their worth. Any individual who respects the boundaries of their fellow Scouts and Scouters is welcome in my troop.

Now all that is left is getting the Troop Committee and the Assistant Scoutmasters on board and step one to desegregating the Southwest Florida Council will be achieved.

As a parent of two boys in Southwest Florida Council and as an adult volunteer, I urge Southwest Florida Council and all other councils to adopt an inclusive policy.

Currently an Assistant Scoutmaster, the BSA's anti-gay policy goes against the core of my spiritual beliefs while it pretends to be nonsectarian. I resent that the BSA tells my sons to be reverent, kind, loyal, and helpful out of one side of its mouth, then tells them to reject gay brethren in direct opposition to their religious beliefs out of the other side. Sexuality has nothing to do with the content of one's character, and it is morally reprehensible to reject LGBTQ people strictly because they are LGBTQ.

because all kids -- and all families -- should know they are welcomed in the Scouts.
