Don't seperate gay penguins to breed them with opposite sex

The Toronto Zoo has decided to separate two of their African male penguins, Buddy and Pedro, in order to breed them with African females. Buddy and Pedro have been in, what Joe Torzsok, Toronto Zoo Board Chair, describes as a "loving relationship of some sort" for quite a while.

Buddy and Pedro are not the first documented gay penguins. Roy and Silo, penguins at the Central Park Zoo in New York, hatched an egg together which inspired the children's picture book, "And Tango Makes Three." Similar cases have also been reported in Florida, Germany, and Japan.

Separating Buddy and Pedro who have bonded with each other in a loving relationship is bad enough, but to then force them to mate with females who they are not attracted to is absurd.

Please help stop The Toronto Zoo from ruining the lives of these two penguins and send a message that forcing gay creatures to mate with the opposite gender will not make them straight. Penguins, like people, have the right to be in a relationship with whomever they choose, even a partner of the same sex.

The zoo said in response to the uproar over the separation, "Humans tend to anthropomorphize things. They try to think of penguins as humans -- and they're not."

So just because they are animals, they don't have feelings? The zoo has the right to split them up as long as they bring them back together only after they have bred with a female? Absurd. Please share with your friends and send a message to the zoo: penguins can love, and they shouldn't be kept apart until they conform to what you want them to be.

    4. Amazing support: Let's keep at it!

Your support for Buddy and Pedro has been incredible. I'm sure they'd be happy if they knew how hard we were fighting to keep them together.

Many people over the past week have asked me if I even care about the fact that African penguins are endangered. I do care. I care a lot about animals and extinction. However, I do not believe that keeping together these two penguins will bring the downfall of the entire species. There are more male penguins at this zoo besides Buddy and Pedro. Why not let them mate? There is no reason that these two need to be split up right now.

Help me tell the zoo that one pair of gay penguins will not make them all extinct. Upping the goal to 750. We can do it!

    6. Nearing 400 -- Let's make the zoo listen

A curator at the zoo said the following regarding Buddy and Pedro: "Two girls have been following them; we just have to get the boys interested in looking at them." So splitting them up will make them interested? We are nearing 400 signatures. Let's get to 500 and show the zoo that splitting up Buddy and Pedro will not change who they are. They love each other, and no one has the right to keep them apart.

    7. More than half way there! Tell your friends.

We are more than half way to our current goal of 500 signatures, and already the zoo is feeling the pressure. A recent news article reports that they are now "considering" putting Buddy and Pedro back together after mating season. But that is not enough.

Share this petition with your friends to keep the pressure up. Tell the zoo that "considering" a compromise that would still involve separating Pedro and Buddy for months on end is unacceptable. They deserve to stay together through mating season.

We are nearing 200 signatures! However, to get the zoo to really notice us, we will probably have to reach around 1k signatures. Please share this with your friends to help spread the word. Penguins can love, and splitting them up would be devastating. I'm sure Buddy and Pedro would thank you for your support if they could speak.

The following article was published in the Huffington Post about the decision to separate Buddy and Pedro, quoting Joe Torzsok, Chair of the Board of Toronto Zoo. It also describes their long-term relationship and other famous cases of gay penguins.
