Lexi Kirwin: has updated their website and removed all traces of masculine-associated words from the word "power"'s entry! I cannot believe how many people this petition reached. Thank you to everyone who signed and made a difference.

Although an individual's gender used to indicate how much power s/he held, the political correctness of those ideas expired a few decades ago. Media, obviously including, desire to blindly reach for any means to ruin the control which powerful women possess. I am tired of witnessing the marginalization and blatant ridicule of half of the world's population. Occurrences as subtle as a synonym entry in an online thesaurus prohibit the public's ability to hold women worthy of power to high standards. Implying that power equates with maleness concurrently implies that femaleness equates with incapacity and weakness. Narrow portraits of femininity restrict females' self-expression. Women subconsciously begin to conform to societal expectations, which effectively cause them to become what media portray them to be.'s entry for "power" currently functions as a causal agent of patriarchy and misogyny. Surely hundreds, if not thousands, of people search the synonym page of "power" everyday. Yet, the Apple app has been ranked best iPad app for students by U.S. News and among the top ten iPhone apps for back to school by Time. will remain an impediment to gender equality as long as sexist messages continue to infiltrate through supposedly objective content.

By signing this petition, you not only support the removal of "male" as the first and foremost related word to power, but also agree to stop using and all of its sister websites,,, and, until the word is removed.

This petition was started because of three college women. If InterActiveCorp remains under the misconception that only men matter in relation to power, they need to think again.

It makes no sense. There is no logical reason for gender to even be associated with power, at default.
